A new report has claimed that Liam Delap could be leaving Chelsea in the upcoming Summer Transfer window, as the young English striker has had a disappointing debut season so far at Chelsea. Delap has only managed to score 1 goal in 18 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, which are unacceptable numbers for a striker who plays for a top club like the Blues.
Latest Chelsea transfer report reveals Everton interest in Liam Delap
A new article from Teamtalk reveals that Everton have identified Chelsea striker Liam Delap as a top summer target, with David Moyes keen to strengthen his forward options, especially if Beto leaves the club. Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town for £30 million last summer, has struggled to make an impact at Stamford Bridge, scoring just twice in 24 appearances and starting only one Premier League game under Liam Rosenior this season.
While reports suggest Chelsea are open to selling, a final decision has not yet been made, though his future is under review. Everton are closely monitoring the situation, but could face competition from Manchester United and Newcastle if Delap becomes available.
Our opinion on Chelsea potentially selling Liam Delap this summer to Everton
Liam Delap is a classic case of a talented young player joining a big club way too soon. There is no doubt regarding his talent, as Delap had scored 12 Premier League goals in a poor Ipswich side last season that eventually got relegated. That's not all, most of the top clubs in England were all interested in signing him last summer due his talent and affordable transfer fee. Chelsea got his signature after overcoming competition from some of England's biggest clubs, which is another proof of how highly he's rated in England.
The move to Chelsea was simply too soon for Delap, and he probably should've moved to a mid-table club like Everton last summer instead of making such a big jump immediately. However, he still had a lot of time left at age 23, and we believe it's best for him to join a mid-table club like Everton and spend a few seasons there to grow and develop. Who knows, Delap might still eventually develop into the superstar forward most clubs expected him to become at a mid-table and later make another huge move to a top English or European club.
For the present though, it's very clear that Delap and Chelsea simply aren't a good match. Delap needs to leave for his own growth, while Chelsea also need a more mature and experienced top striker. Nicolas Jackson might also return to Chelsea in the Summer as well, with his Bayern move being quite underwhelming so far. Thus, all factors make an exit from Stamford Bridge the next best career option for Delap as it stands.
