Liverpool signs Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes

The Athletic had confirmed that Liverpool officially won the signature of Rennes Prodigy Jeremy Jacquet, who was also a serious target for Chelsea and even Arsenal previously. David Ornstein reported that Rennes defender Jeremy Jacquet is closing in on a move to Liverpool and is set to undergo a medical ahead of a proposed summer transfer. The 20-year-old is expected to sign a contract running until 2031, with the option of a further 12-month extension. He is due to arrive in north-west England on Monday, with the deal valued at £55 million plus £5 million in add-ons and personal terms not expected to cause any problems.

While there is absolutely no doubt that this is an exciting signing? The big question have Liverpool signed a brilliant player for the wrong time when their current situation in defense is extremely worrying

Liverpool's injury crisis at defense could result in Arne Slot's sack and club getting demoted to the Europa League

Liverpool are currently in an injury crisis, especially in defense. While the injury to Alexander Isak earlier in the season was a huge blow, the presence of star forwards such as Hugo Ekiteke and Mohamed Salah means the situation is manageable for Arne Slot. However, the Reds don't boast the same squad depth when it comes to their defense.

Right-backs Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong are both out injured, while Summer signing Giovanni Leoni suffered a serious Injury earlier in the season. Joe Gomez doesn't have any serious injury, but he's always injury prone and can't be depended on. This means the likes of Ibrahima Konate and Virgil are the only fit centre backs in the squad right now. The situation is an incredibly dangerous one for Arne Slot and Liverpool, which they must solve by getting a centre back before the transfer window closes.

Although the club looked for Sunderland loan player Lutsharel Geertruida, the deal collapsed in the end. Thus, they must now look at other alternatives. There is absolutely no excuse to not sign a centre back considering the severity of the situation. An Injury to Van Dijk or Konate would have huge consequences on Liverpool's season, and it wouldn't even be surprising to see them in the Europa League next season if any further defensive injuries happen to a Liverpool Player.

Thus, the signing of Jeremy Jacquet, who is one of the best young defenders in the world, is exciting, huge questions need to be asked regarding the importance and timing of it when Liverpool have such a huge crisis at the back.

Liverpool's decision to not sign Marc Guéhi is shocking

A player like Marc Guéhi would've been a dream signing for Liverpool in their current situation. He's a world-class defender that would've instantly improved them, almost guaranteed them Champions League qualification, and could've become the long-term successor to Captain Virgil Van Dijk. While the Guehi transfer collapse in the earlier Summer transfer window might've been forgivable, the decision to allow Manchester City to sign the player in the January Transfer window is shocking, and one that the club might end up regretting in the years to come.
