Mamadou Sangaré has wasted absolutely no time announcing himself to the Premier League. Brentford’s new club-record signing produced an outstanding debut against Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham, helping the Bees cruise to a dominant 3-0 victory over the London club. The Mali international joined Brentford from Lens for a club-record fee reported to be between £38.5 million and £41 million, with the overall package reportedly worth around €45 million including add-ons. Sangaré had signed a five-year contract running until June 2031, with Brentford holding an option to extend it by another year until June 2032.
If his first Premier League appearance is anything to go by, Brentford may have discovered another midfield superstar.

Sangaré’s debut was far more than simply a promising first appearance. The 23-year-old had a devastating influence on both ends of the pitch, showing exactly why Brentford were willing to make him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

Those statistics perfectly demonstrate the all-action nature of Sangaré’s performance. He was not simply sitting in front of the defence and recycling possession. The Mali midfielder constantly looked to progress the ball, break Tottenham’s defensive lines and contribute to Brentford’s attacking moves, while simultaneously working relentlessly to regain possession and protect his own defence.
His assist was the perfect representation of his attacking influence, but his defensive contribution was arguably just as impressive.
Sangaré Steals the Spotlight from Tonali
There was considerable anticipation surrounding Tottenham’s midfield before the game, particularly because of their record signing Sandro Tonali.
Many expected the Italian midfielder to be one of the biggest stories of the match. Instead, Sangaré completely stole the spotlight.
The Brentford midfielder seemingly came out of nowhere and delivered a performance that not only overshadowed Tonali but arguably overshadowed every other player on the pitch.

Is Sangaré The Next Premier League Midfield Superstar?
Comparisons with some of the Premier League’s elite defensive midfielders will inevitably follow if Sangaré continues producing performances like this.
The modern defensive midfielder is no longer expected to simply break up attacks. Players such as Moisés Caicedo, Rodri and Declan Rice have demonstrated how important it is for a No. 6 to influence both defensive and attacking phases.
Sangaré's debut certainly contained elements of that profile.
Like Caicedo, he possesses the energy to cover enormous areas of the pitch. Like Rodri, he showed an ability to dictate possession and find line-breaking passes. And like Rice, he demonstrated that a defensive midfielder can become a significant part of attacking transitions.
There is also an intriguing comparison to Elliot Anderson, another midfielder who has rapidly developed into one of the Premier League’s most exciting all-round midfielders.
Of course, one match cannot establish whether Sangaré will reach that level. The Premier League is an entirely different challenge from Ligue 1, and opponents will quickly adapt once they understand his strengths.
But his debut could hardly have provided a better first impression.
What Comes Next For Mamadou Sangaré?
The most exciting aspect of Sangaré’s arrival is that there could be considerably more to come.
A midfielder capable of combining defensive intensity, progressive passing, physicality and attacking involvement is an incredibly valuable commodity in modern football. If Sangaré can maintain the standards he established against Tottenham, Brentford could eventually find themselves possessing one of the Premier League’s elite defensive midfielders.
And that could have enormous financial implications.
Brentford have repeatedly demonstrated their ability to identify players before they become established stars, develop them and eventually sell them for substantial profits.
If Sangaré’s debut proves to be the beginning of his development into a world-class CDM, following in the footsteps of players such as Caicedo, Rodri and Rice, his future transfer value could become astronomical.
A player who develops into that calibre of midfielder would almost certainly attract Europe's biggest clubs.
And if that happens, Sangaré could eventually leave Brentford for a fee comfortably exceeding the £100 million mark.
For now, though, Brentford fans should simply enjoy what could be the beginning of something very special.
