Marcus Rashford's transfer saga has been one of the biggest rollercoasters of the summer. After an impressive loan spell with Hansi Flick's Barcelona, the Manchester United forward appeared destined to remain at Camp Nou permanently. However, Barcelona shocked everyone by turning their attention to Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon instead, completing a deal reportedly worth around £69.3 million. As a result, Barcelona did not take up their option to sign Rashford permanently, leaving him back at Manchester United. This was particularly surprising given that Rashford had previously been frozen out at Old Trafford and seemed unlikely to play for the club again. Yet, with the transfer window approaching its conclusion, there could still be a route for the England international to return to Barcelona.
Rashford's Manchester United Bust-Up Led to His Exit
Rashford's problems at Manchester United escalated during Ruben Amorim's time in charge. The forward was dropped from the squad after the December Manchester derby, following concerns over his training standards and ability to adapt to Amorim's demands. Amorim publicly insisted that Rashford had to change before he could return to the team, while the relationship between the pair deteriorated significantly.
The situation eventually resulted in Rashford being frozen out of United's first team and sent on loan to Aston Villa in February 2025. Villa had an option to make the move permanent, but Rashford's career eventually took another dramatic turn when Barcelona came calling.
Barcelona's loan agreement, which ran until June 2026, included an option to buy the forward permanently. What followed was arguably the most successful period of Rashford's recent career.
Rashford Impressed During His Barcelona Spell
Under Flick, Rashford rediscovered the confidence and attacking freedom that had made him one of Europe's most dangerous forwards. His pace, movement and ability to operate from the left or through the middle gave Barcelona another important attacking dimension.
Rashford finished his Barcelona spell with eight goals and seven assists in 32 La Liga appearances, while he also registered five goals and three assists in 11 Champions League games.
Those numbers demonstrated that Rashford could still perform at the highest level when placed in an attacking system suited to his strengths. Barcelona's decision to move for Gordon therefore came as a major surprise, especially after Rashford had seemingly done enough to convince many supporters that he deserved a permanent stay.
That left Rashford with an uncertain future and, unexpectedly, back in Manchester.
Michael Carrick Is Giving Rashford Another Chance
The situation at Manchester United has changed considerably since Rashford's exile. Amorim is no longer in charge, and Michael Carrick has shown a willingness to give the forward another opportunity.
Carrick has praised Rashford's fitness, attitude and sharpness since his return, suggesting that the 28-year-old could have an important role to play rather than simply being treated as an unwanted player.
That became clear in United's Premier League opener against Hull City. Rashford came early off the bench at half-time, and Carrick was subsequently positive about his contribution and hinted that the forward could remain part of his squad beyond the transfer window.
For now, that makes a permanent Barcelona return appear unlikely. However, there is one huge situation in Spain that could potentially change everything.
Could Barcelona Turn Back to Rashford?
The key is the increasingly ugly Julián Álvarez saga involving Barcelona and Atlético Madrid.
Barcelona have made Álvarez one of their major attacking targets, but Atlético have been absolutely adamant that their star forward is not for sale. Atlético CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has stated that the club rejected a €100 million offer and would also reject proposals worth €150 million or €200 million.
The situation has become even more complicated because Álvarez reportedly wants the move to Barcelona. Atlético have accused Barcelona of improperly pursuing the player and have taken their objections to football's governing authorities. Meanwhile, Álvarez has increasingly appeared unhappy with Atlético's refusal to allow him to leave.
Diego Simeone has also publicly maintained that Atlético will not sell the Argentine during this transfer window.
This is where Rashford could potentially re-enter Barcelona's thinking.
If the Álvarez saga remains unresolved, Atlético refuse to negotiate and Barcelona ultimately accept that they cannot sign their preferred forward, the Catalan giants could suddenly find themselves needing another attacking option before the transfer deadline.
And Rashford would make obvious sense.
Barcelona already know exactly what he can offer. Flick knows how to use him, the player has already adapted to the club and his previous spell demonstrated that he can contribute goals and assists in both La Liga and the Champions League. More importantly, Barcelona would not need to gamble on whether Rashford can fit into their system.
Of course, there is still a major obstacle: Manchester United would need to agree to another deal, while Carrick appears increasingly open to keeping Rashford.
But football's transfer window is notorious for late twists.
If Barcelona's pursuit of Álvarez completely collapses and they suddenly need an experienced forward, Rashford could once again become an option. What looked like a closed chapter after Barcelona chose Gordon could therefore become another unexpected twist in one of the summer's most dramatic transfer sagas.
