Netherlands vs Japan FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Preview

Netherlands once again enter a World Cup edition with the burden of being the side finishing as runners-up more than any side in the competition’s history, having lost three finals. Their ambitious journey four years ago in their return to the global stage also ended in the quarterfinal stage at the hands of eventual winners Argentina on penalties, despite making a remarkable turnaround from 2-0 down. It came to be known as the ‘Battle of Lusail’, which saw 18 yellow cards and one red card handed out, setting a new record for cautions at any FIFA-administered international tournament. Now making their 12th appearance in the finals with a talented squad under the watch of Ronald Koeman, remarkably his first World Cup as manager despite this being his second spell with the national team, the Dutch want to fulfil their long desire in North America in the biggest tournament of all. However, despite a decent qualification campaign, the team’s inconsistent form, with questionable management from Koeman, alongside injuries to key players, has kept them on the edge. The Oranje shirt also faces a challenging group containing fellow UEFA side Sweden, solid African outfit Tunisia and Asian giants Japan, whom they open their campaign against. However, Koeman’s side are unbeaten in their last 16 group matches at the World Cup with 12 wins and four draws, which is their longest current unbeaten run, while they have not lost their last nine opening matches at FIFA's flagship competition.  That gives them the belief of opening their 2026 World Cup campaign on a positive note. Meanwhile, Japan also faced penalty shootout heartbreak in Qatar at the hands of Croatia in the Round of 16 stage after an incredible performance that saw them top a group containing two former winners, Germany and Spain, having also taken the lead against the 2018 finalist in the tie. Yet, the elimination only made them stronger as the Blue Samurai continued their progress from an Asian giant to a force to be watched out for on the world stage. Coach Hajime Moriyasu brings another group full of quality and talent that is striving for another memorable run in the competition, coming off an excellent qualifying campaign where they became the first side to book their ticket for North America and carrying an eye-catching six-game winning streak into the tournament. Japan has also defeated World Cup favourites Brazil and England in that period, proving their credentials again. Moriyasu’s three at the back system has made them flexible in attack, scoring a huge 30 goals in 10 games in the qualifiers and also defensively adept, keeping a clean sheet in the last five games. The Blue Samurai look scary going into the 2026 World Cup and believe they can stun many, like last time, by achieving a high finish in a tricky group and it won’t be a better start than upsetting the Dutch. However, they have huge injury absentees to battle with. After losing former Liverpool player Takumi Minamino last December, they suffered another massive blow in losing star winger Kaoru Mitoma close to the tournament. If that was not enough, Captain Wataru Endo withdrew from the squad after suffering an injury in the final friendly game against Iceland just four days before their tournament opener. Netherlands vs Japan FIFA World Cup 2026 Team News

Netherlands have been plagued with injuries, having lost their prime creative force, Xavi Simons, at the very end of last season after he tore his ACL and reliable defender Jurrien Timber, who failed to recover from his groin injury he has been nursing for the last couple of months despite being named in the final World Cup squad. Now, they have a major issue in the number one position with their first choice, Bart Verbruggen, injured in their final friendly game against Uzbekistan, casting doubt over his participation in the tournament opener. If he remains unfit, Bayer Leverkusen’s Mark Flekken could don the gloves instead. There is also a debate about who could start up front with their record goalscorer, Memphis Depay, who was both the top scorer with eight goals and joint-top assist provider with four assists for the Netherlands in the World Cup qualifiers, struggling with a thigh injury after much speculation of him getting into the roster. Here’s the Netherlands FIFA World Cup FAQs

Likewise, Japan has been struck with massive injury concerns before their World Cup begins, with Endo adding to the woes of losing Minamino and Mitoma with his late withdrawal from the squad. The midfielder already struggled with injuries last season, with his absence making the midfield light on options, quality and experience. In his absence, Kaishu Sano will be preferred alongside Leeds United’s Ao Tanaka, who will also take the captaincy armband, in the middle of the park. The Blue Samurai will lineup in the 3-4-2-1 formation with essentially five forwards in attack, including their explosive wingbacks, Keito Nakamura and Ritsu Doan, the latter scoring twice in the finals last time. The two floating 10s will include the energetic Takefusa Kubo and the creative force, Junya Ito, the veteran who provided a stunning 10 assists in the AFC qualifiers, sitting behind Ayase Ueda, coming off an eye-catching 25-goal season with Feyenoord and having bagged eight goals in the qualifiers.

Netherlands vs Japan FIFA World Cup 2026 Match Prediction

This is a game that could go either way, with both teams having enormous talent and more significantly, fantastic firepower. It is unlikely to be a cagey affair requiring individual quality to make the difference like their meeting 16 years ago, but it will be an emphatic team game from both sides. The Netherlands won this tie with a Wesley Sneijder goal back then, dominating in possession, which will be a trend we get to see on Sunday as well. However, Japan will not make this game one-sided, even though solidity will be their main priority, as they will hit the Dutch’s shaky defence with their pacey and creative forwards. A thrilling end is very much likely with both sides showing their attacking potential, with injuries to key players also playing a part, while a point won’t be bad for either side in this possible group deciding clash in their first game itself.
