Paraguay FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

Paraguay are back at the World Cup stage guided by their genius coach Gustavo Alfaro who oversaw a stunning qualification journey with a squad that hopes to repeat the heroics of their last participation at the finals in 2010 where they reached the quarterfinal stage in a stunning display in South Africa. Having defeated South American giants including defending champions Argentina in the CONMEBOL qualifiers, they have every right to dream of doing the unthinkable again. However, Paraguay are placed in a tricky group alongside co-hosts USA, Asian giants Australia and an extremely talented Turkey side in Group D which will pose major threat to their defense.

Paraguay FIFA World Cup History

Paraguay has qualified for the FIFA World Cup finals nine times in 1930, 1950, 1958, 1986, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, and now 2026. Their historic return in 2026 snaps a 16-year tournament drought. Paraguay was an invited participant at the inaugural 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, securing their first-ever tournament victory with a 1–0 win over Belgium. They made brief group-stage appearances in 1950 and 1958 but struggled to establish consistency on the global stage. At Mexico 1986, Paraguay advanced past the group stage for the first time, bowing out to England in the Round of 16. The late 1998 and 2002 cycles featured legendary goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert. At France 1998, they pushed eventual champions France to the absolute brink, losing only to a 114th-minute golden goal in the Round of 16. Paraguay’s finest hour arrived at South Africa 2010. Managed by Gerardo Martino, they topped their group ahead of Italy, overcame Japan in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, and pushed eventual champions Spain to a grueling 1–0 defeat in the quarter-finals.

Paraguay Qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Paraguay created a sensational story in CONMEBOL qualifiers as they grabbed the automatic spots for the 2026 World Cup against expectations. Granted the tournament has expanded to 48 nations with CONMEBOL now having six direct qualification slots instead of four, it doesn't take the shine away of Los Guaraníes's incredible work to return back to the pinnacle of international competition after 2010. The appointment of Gustavo Alfaro in August 2024 was a game changer for the side as it completely transformed the fortunes of the team. Paraguay made a horror start to their World Cup qualifying campaign with just one win in the first five games and had one of their worst Copa America campaigns last year. The Argentinian coach brought a new enthusiasm to the squad that was reflected in their audacious run of losing just once in the remaining 12 games and securing the automatic berth to the World Cup in North America. Known for engineering defensive fortresses, Alfaro orchestrated massive qualifying upsets, including crucial, clean-sheet victories over heavyweights Brazil and Argentina. Initially having a poor start to their qualifying campaign, Paraguay managed to match the points tally of heavyweights like Colombia, Uruguay and Brazil, showing their tremendous revival. They finished sixth on the table due to the goal difference, but it is the least they will care about, having locked their names for a ninth appearance at the finals. Having qualified for the 2030 World Cup as one of the special hosts for the centenary edition, qualifying in this manner for the current edition only gives good signs for Paraguayan football.

Paraguay Form and Preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026

After the qualifiers, Paraguay arranged a series of meaningful friendlies to be well prepared for the finals of this final. These games showed both the effectiveness and deficiency in the squad. The pair of friendlies against Asian giants Japan and South Korea in October last year showed their struggles against teams outside of CONMEBOL region with the difficulties of not playing in their continent. They played a 2-2 draw against Japan and while that wasn't a bad result at all, the 2-0 defeat to South Korea in the next game exposed the limitations. Things didn't improved in November when they faced USA in a friendly before they fight them again in the finals itself. Alfaro's team suffered defeat but it was a close one, 2-1. However, they managed to give themselves a positive moment when they defeated the other co-host of the tournament this summer, Mexico, with a victory by same scoreline to end 2025 on a high. The start to this year was also a bright one as they secured a 1-0 victory against a UEFA side in Greece in March. However, they were given a reality check again with a 2-1 defeat to one of tournament's dark horses, Morocco.

Strengths of Paraguay Football Team

Under Alfaro, Paraguay has mastered the low-block system. They deny space in the final third, frustrate opponents, and limit high-percentage shooting opportunities. Led by veterans Gustavo Gómez and Omar Alderete, La Albirroja is incredibly proficient defending and executing set-pieces. The transition from defense to attack is remarkably fast, fueled by elite wingers capable of carrying the ball over vast distances under pressure. No one does better in the squad than former Newcastle United star and now Atlanta United player, Miguel Almirón. The experienced 32-year old winger has been the talisman for the side multiple times. They have talents like Julio Enciso who can make a difference with his playmaking abilities and pace on the break, having scored three goals and provided one assist in the qualifiers.

Weaknesses of Paraguay Football Team

Paraguay frequently struggles to find the back of the net when forced to dictate possession against deep-lying defensive units. Their philosophy is woven into teams to come at them so they can break play and orchestrate counter attacks or win set-pieces in dangerous areas, two primary sources for their goals. With all sides in their group, except for Australia, wanting to play possession based attacking football, it might not be a big issue for Alfaro's men. However, the real problem for the side is that they struggle against teams outside of South America and collected just one win against them in the preparation friendlies. The pressure of their group is very high as they face a USA team who are the host with a noisy home support, aside from very talented, with the game against them being the World Cup opener. The same thing is about Turkey make it a very challenging one for them.

Key player: Gustavo Gómez

Gustavo Gómez is the indispensable heartbeat and defensive anchor of this Paraguay squad. As the team's long-serving captain, his world-class positional awareness, physical resilience, and elite aerial dominance provide the foundation for Gustavo Alfaro’s low-block defensive system. Beyond his technical ability to shut down elite world-class strikers, Gómez supplies the emotional leadership and tournament experience crucial for organizing La Albirroja's backline under heavy pressure. He is the coach's tactical lieutenant on the pitch, making his presence the single most critical factor if Paraguay hopes to frustrate opponents and advance deep into the knockout rounds.

Talent to Watch : Julio Enciso

The Strasbourg forward is Paraguay’s ultimate creative wildcard and a prime candidate for a global breakout tournament due to his elite dribbling, unpredictability, and fearless attacking flair. Operating as an advanced playmaker or drifting inward from the flank, Julio Enciso possesses a rare, explosive ability to break down rigid defensive structures through individual brilliance alone. His world-class vision makes him the perfect engine for Gustavo Alfaro's transition-heavy system, while his lethal long-range shooting accuracy poses a constant threat from outside the penalty box. Enciso is tasked with floating between lines to break opponent's organisation. In a squad primarily known for its defensive grit, the young attacker provides the essential spark of imagination and cutting-edge skill required to unlock elite defences on the world stage.

Manager: Gustavo Alfaro

Gustavo Alfaro’s tenure has sparked a profound, psychology-driven revolution that single-handedly rescued Paraguay's 2026 World Cup qualification campaign. Appointed in August 2024, he inherited a deeply struggling squad and completely masterminded a rapid turnaround by implementing a brilliant blend of motivational philosophy and tactical discipline. The 63-year-old Argentine tactician famously orchestrated a spectacular nine-match unbeaten streak in CONMEBOL qualifying, spearheading historic, clean-sheet giant-killings against South American heavyweights Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. By combining his signature defensive solidity with an intellectual approach to player morale, Alfaro restored La Albirroja’s core identity, snapping their agonizing 16-year drought to deliver the nation's highly anticipated return to the premier competition.

Gustavo Alfaro relies heavily on a highly structured, compact 4-2-3-1 formation designed to absorb opposition pressure before executing lightning-fast wide transitions. Gastón Olveira earns the starting spot due to superior form and box command. A rigid back four where full-backs Cáceres and Alonso prioritize structural positioning over attacking overlapping runs. Captain Gomez and Alderete are the solid center-back pairing. Andrés Cubas acts as the primary defensive screen, while Diego Gómez provides box-to-box engine work. Julio Enciso operates as an advanced playmaker, flanked by the pace of Almirón and Ramón Sosa. Antonio Sanabria acts as a focal point to the attackz hold up the ball and bringing the wingers into play.

Paraguay FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

Paraguay find themselves in a very difficult group to maneuver in the finals. They have no fixture that they can spot out and term it likeable to take points to make their knockout progression easier. The CONMEBOL's side turnaround under Alfaro has been nothing short of a remarkable achievement and them getting to this stage after years of dismay only proves their undying mentality. However, Paraguay fears an early elimination from the competition even with a lot of flexibility around knockout qualification after the expansion of the tournament. That is down to their struggles against sides from different regions and placed in a group that contains two talented sides that can trouble any defences in the league. Even Australia will pose a different challenge that could make them tricky opponents. They even lost to the USA in the friendly last year. For sure, Paraguay will make it hard to beat them but they could only go so far without having a significant attacking threat. That might restrict to gain enough points to be among the eight best teams who will qualify from the third spot even if they finish there.
