Pep Guardiola's Manchester City continued their excellent Premier League run after a 2-1 victory over Eddie Howe's Newcastle, and yet the Spaniard had the time to congratulate his former player James Milner who recently broke a Premier League appearance record. James Milner made Premier League history on February 21 by becoming the competition’s all-time appearance record holder. The 40-year-old started for Brighton against Brentford to register his 654th top-flight appearance, moving past Gareth Barry’s long-standing record of 653 games. The milestone was warmly acknowledged before kick-off, with even the home supporters applauding Milner’s remarkable longevity and consistency at the highest level.
Milner, who is currently at age 40, is still going strong and has made 16 appearances for Brighton this season in the Premier League. The English midfielder has had an iconic career that has lasted for more than 2 decades, during which he has played for top clubs such as Manchester City and Liverpool.
James Milner: A magnificent squad every manager would love to have
James Milner is widely known for his exceptional versatility, having played in almost every outfield position throughout his career. While his preferred role is central midfield, he began largely as a winger at Leeds United and Newcastle United before transitioning into midfield during his time at Aston Villa.
At Liverpool, his adaptability was a major asset under Jürgen Klopp, with Milner even spending the entire 2016–17 season at left-back despite admitting it wasn’t his favourite position. He later featured in holding and box-to-box midfield roles, earning praise for his energy, work rate, and consistent, team-first performances across different systems.
