The Premier League has confirmed four mandatory changes to the Laws of the Game that will come into effect for the 2026/27 season. The updates are designed to reduce time-wasting, improve player safety, and enhance the consistency of officiating. Here's a breakdown of every new rule fans should know.
1. Longer Wait for Injured Players
Players who receive on-field medical treatment or assessment will now be required to remain off the pitch for at least one minute before returning. This replaces the previous 30-second requirement and aims to minimise unnecessary stoppages while discouraging players from using injuries to slow the game down.
2. Tougher Punishment for Time-Wasting
Referees will introduce a visible five-second countdown for throw-ins and goal-kicks. If a player deliberately exceeds the time limit, there will be immediate consequences. A delayed throw-in will be awarded to the opposition, while taking too long over a goal-kick will result in the opposing team receiving a corner kick.
3. Faster Substitutions Required
Substituted players must now leave the field within 10 seconds. Failure to do so means the incoming substitute cannot enter until the first stoppage after one minute has passed. The rule is another step towards eliminating time-wasting tactics, particularly in the closing stages of matches.
4. Expanded VAR Review for Second Yellow Red Cards
VAR will now be able to review situations where a player has already been shown a second yellow card that results in a red card. However, the review only applies after the second yellow has been awarded, not for potential second-yellow incidents that were missed by the referee.
What Isn't Changing?
The Premier League has confirmed it will not adopt optional law changes for the new season. Most notably, VAR will not be given expanded powers to review incorrectly awarded corner kicks.
Refereeing Focus for 2026/27
Alongside the rule changes, referees have also been given new points of emphasis for the season. Officials will continue taking a "less is more" approach to handball decisions, improve the identification of holding offences, and crack down on attackers unfairly impeding goalkeepers. New guidance has also been introduced for dealing proportionately with hair-pulling incidents, while referees will continue to punish simulation and embellishment robustly to protect the integrity of the game.
