Saudi Arabia FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

Having left a mark in Qatar with that stunning victory over Argentina in one of World Cup's greatest upsets, Saudi Arabia hopes to produce more unforgettable memories in the 2026 edition. However, the Asian giants are arriving in North America disjointed having swapped Herve Renard, who oversaw that legendary victory, for Georgios Donis just two months before the tournament and having scrapped through the qualifiers unconvincingly. They also have an intense Group H to handle as it pits the Green Falcons against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay, European champions Spain and tournament debutants Cape Verde.

Saudi Arabia FIFA World Cup History

Saudi Arabia made a debut worth remembering in the 1994 World Cup, which incidentally also hosted in the USA. The Green Falcons shocked the football world by defeating Belgium and Morocco to reach the Round of 16. That iconic maiden campaign featured a legendary, Maradona-esque solo goal by Saeed Al-Owairan against Belgium. Their best return in the World Cup till date. Since then, Saudi Arabia has established itself as one of Asia's most consistent representatives, securing qualification for seven tournaments overall, including appearances in 1998, 2002, 2006, 2018, 2022, and 2026. While they have exited in the group stages in every participation since their debut campaign, they authoritatively cemented their place in World Cup folklore at Qatar 2022 by pulling off a staggering 2–1 upset victory over eventual champions Argentina, snapping La Albiceleste’s 36-match unbeaten streak. However, aside from moments the side has failed to have a grip on anything as they have lost 68% of their World Cup matches, 13 of 19, which is the highest loss rate of any nation to have played 15 or more games at the tournament. Saudi Arabia Qualification and Preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Frenchman Herve Renard, who masterminded the Green Falcons' 2022 World Cup campaign, returned to the hot seat for his second spell and guided the team to the 2026 finals with a few hiccups along the way. He oversaw the side finishing a disappointing third behind Japan and Australia, missing the automatic qualification route in the third round by six points. They manage to get it in the next round though but in a scrappy way. Despite them hosting the round, Saudi Arabia just managed to get a victory against Indonesia, a close 3-2 affair with the visitors taking the lead inside 11 minutes. The game against Iraq produced a stalemate but the result put them on the driving seat for the finals this summer. However, their performance was unconvincing. A 4-0 home defeat against Egypt in a friendly in March this year also became the straw that broke the camel's back as it cost Renard his job, following continuous disagreement with the board, leading to the appointment of former Greece and Blackburn midfielder Georgios Donis at the eleventh hour. The Greek boss has taken charge of the friendlies leading up to the World Cup with mixed results. Despite giving a strong fight to Ecuador, they had to settle for a 2-1 defeat against their South American counterparts due to individual mistakes. However, the team gained some winning momentum when they defeated Puerto Rico 3-0 in the final friendly. Here’s the Saudi Arabia FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualification Stats and Results

Strengths of Saudi Arabia Football Team

The most positive part of this team is that they have more of an attacking flux this time. They have a constant difference maker in Salem Al Dawsari who will like to create extraordinary moments like the Argentina winner four years ago and on the other hand upcoming talents like 22-year-old Musab Al Juwayr provided who provided six goal contributions in the qualifiers, three goals and three assists, looking to be mainstay in the team in the future. Al Dawsari is also playing in his third World Cup while nine players have played at a previous finals, making the squad possessing a strong tournament experience. Manager Donis' former employees Al Khaleej side scored freely under him in the Saudi top flight this season and he will bring a more attacking approach to the national team.

His first match in charge on May 31st was a narrow 2-1 defeat to Ecuador, but Saudi Arabia had more shots with 12, while dominating more possession and attempted more forward passes than their opponents. Even if the numbers were helped because of the pragmatic style of football their South American opponents play, it was a sign of things to come from them.

Weaknesses of Saudi Arabia Football Team

It can't be denied that the Green Falcons has over reliance on Saudi Arabia's reigning Asian Player of the Year Al Dawsari still and depend on him heavily to offer the big moments at the biggest stage. Their talisman is now 34 and will need some support which has not properly grown in the squad. All but one of the squad play domestically, and the influx of foreign talent has meant some players have not enjoyed as many minutes as they would like. Apart from right back Saud Abdulhamid of Ligue 1 side RC Lens everybody else is untested on foreign soil which will be an issue despite the majority of the squad playing in the Saudi Pro League helps build team chemistry stronger. The team has also struggles defensively, having kept just four clean sheets in a year. There is a severe lack of playing time and goals from their traditional forward lines. Due to the massive influx of expensive global stars into the Saudi Pro League, many homegrown Saudi players have been pushed to the bench at their clubs, leaving them short on match fitness and rhythm. Additionally, the sudden, last-minute managerial change, with Donis taking over just weeks before the tournament, means the team lacks tactical familiarity and a stable system under pressure.

Key player: Salem Al Dawsari

Salem Al-Dawsari is widely considered a national symbol and the ultimate cornerstone of modern Saudi Arabian football. As the captain of both Al-Hilal and the Saudi Arabia national team, his legacy was immortalized globally when he scored the breath-taking, decisive winning goal against Argentina in their historic 2-1 upset at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Beyond that single iconic moment, the elite left winger brings invaluable high-pressure experience, exceptional technical flair, and a dominant presence on the continental stage. His immense domestic contributions and leadership have recently seen him achieve over 100 international caps while steering the Green Falcons to consecutive World Cup qualifications. Cementing his status as one of Asia's all-time greatest players, Al-Dawsari made history by becoming the first Saudi player ever to win the prestigious AFC Player of the Year twice. As Saudi Arabia fights to replicate their past heroics and reach the knockout rounds, Al-Dawsari represents the essential bridge of veteran leadership and world-class flair required to upset football's traditional superpowers once again.

Manager: Georgios Donis

Installing a new head coach just 59 days before your opening World Cup match is never ideal, but Saudi Arabia will hope their late appointment of Georgios Donis pays dividends. The former Greek international had been managing Al Khaleej in the Saudi Pro League and replaced Herve Renard, who was given his marching orders after a 4-0 home defeat to Egypt in late March. The 56-year-old, who played in the Premier League, has been coaching in Saudi Arabia but this is his first role at international level. He becomes only the second Greek to coach at a World Cup after Alketas Panagoulias, who incidentally led his country at the other World Cup hosted in USA 1994. Ironically, Donis, who was playing for Greek giants Panathinaikos at the time, was a shock omission from Panagoulias' final 22-man squad 32 years ago. Whether Donis can get the best out of them in such a short space of time remains to be seen.

The team heavily relies on the center-back pairing of Al-Tambakti and Al-Amri to handle top-tier strikers. Rising star Al-Juwayr brings creativity and composure next to the experienced physical presence of Mohamed Kanno. Captain Salem Al-Dawsari will operate out wide left to cut inside, supporting central striker Firas Al-Buraikan, who is fresh off strong displays in domestic cup play.

Saudi Arabia FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

Whether Saudi Arabia can recreate the magic in the finals remains the big ask as they have a very tough group to maneuver and facing the two giants in back to back games. They will start another finals facing a South American outfit in Uruguay and then face the competition favourites Spain. The Green Falcons could essentially enter the final group game against Cape Verde without any points which will make it a make or break game for the side if they are to keep their chances of knockout qualification alive. However, even though the African nation are the debutants in the competition, they won't be an easy opposition. The Asian powerhouses could easily finish bottom of the group after near calamitous qualifiers and last minute managerial changes. Even if they finished third they might not get enough points to be among the eight best third position teams escaping the group stages.
