Sweden FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

Not failing at their second attempt to qualify, Sweden booked their berth in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a renewed sense of belief under manager Graham Potter. The Blue and Yellow are back at the big times after missing out on the 2022 tournament and will hope to make their trip to North America a memorable one, having turned back their form at the time of asking. However, the side has to combat a challenging group containing Tunisia, Japan and the Netherlands to make it to the knockouts, even though the tournament’s expansion has eased the process a bit. With excellent firepower, but questionable defence, Sweden wants to be the ruthless side of the UEFA playoffs rather than the knackered outfit in the main qualifiers to make things happen in the finals.

Sweden FIFA World Cup History

Sweden holds a storied place in World Cup history and has been one of the early teams in the tournament since making their debut in the second iteration of the premier competition in 1934. They quickly became a force as they reached the quarterfinals in their first attempt and achieved fourth place in the next edition, with the competition being played in a direct knockout format back then. However, their finest hour in the competition's history came on home soil in 1958, when the competition in its current structure came into existence, where they reached the final by topping their group and beating the likes of the Soviet Union and West Germany, but eventually falling to a Pelé-inspired Brazil.

That silver medal remains the benchmark for Swedish football. The next big moment for the Nordic country came in the 1994 tournament, also hosted in the USA, which is equally etched in the national psyche. Led by legends like Tomas Brolin and Martin Dahlin, Sweden played breathtaking football to secure a third-place finish. Since then, the team has been a perennial ‘dark horse,’ reaching the quarter-finals as recently as 2018 in their last appearance. The 2026 World Cup will be their 13th appearance at this stage and the fourth one this century, as the side looks to emulate their performance of the last time they were on North American soil.

Sweden Qualification to the FIFA World Cup 2026

Sweden's qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026 could be termed a story of ‘redemption’ or simply a backdoor entry, depending on perspective. They had an embarrassing qualifier at the start, as they finished rock bottom of their group, failing to win a single game, scoring just four goals and conceding 12. The most damning result was losing twice to a rising force, yet a 95th-ranked team, at the time of facing them, Kosovo and also suffering a humiliating 4-1 loss to the eventual group winners, Switzerland. Their performance was shocking, as this Swedish team is one of the most talented ever, with a lethal strike force, but the failure was due to poor management.

Such an outcome would have ended any team’s dream of making it to the World Cup stage, but Sweden received a second chance due to their Nations League performance, which gives group winners of that tournament finishing outside of the top two of their qualifying group a place in the UEFA playoffs. The Blue and Yellow received the spot by winning their group in League C of the Nations League and did not let go of the chance this time. Under Graham Potter, who took the reins in just the penultimate game of the qualifiers following Jon Dahl Tomasson’s dismissal, the side turned their form around spectacularly in the playoffs. A Viktor Gyökeres hat-trick obliterated Ukraine in the semifinal before the Arsenal man scored the dramatic late winner in the 3-2 thriller against Poland to make their distant dream of World Cup qualification a reality.

Strengths of Sweden Football Team

Sweden’s primary strength is undoubtedly their offensive pedigree, having current Premier League top brawlers in the forward positions. Even though the team struggled to score in the qualifiers, despite the wealth of attacking talent in the squad, they redeemed themselves in the playoffs, clicking into the new manager Potter’s tactics in little time, scoring six goals in two games. They have a brilliant option in Gyökeres who provides a brutish, relentless presence in the box, capable of bullying the world's best centre-backs and defth finishing. Even though Aleksandar Isak had a tough time at Liverpool, his quality is undeniable, while Anthony Elanga could terrify any defences with his pace and directness. The midfield is another strong area for the side, which will provide the youthful energy of Tottenham’s Lucas Bergvall or Brighton’s Yasin Ayari, paired with the experience of Jesper Karlström.

Weaknesses of Sweden Football Team

Despite their attacking prowess, Sweden’s main concern remains its defence, which has conceded goals heavily and failed to keep a clean sheet in the entire qualifying journey. In fact, the last time they managed to shut down an opposition in a competitive outing came in the 6-0 humbling of Azerbaijan in their final group stage game of the last Nations League campaign in November 2024. The problem is that the defence has barely changed in this period and is looking to remain the same at the World Cup stage. Potter also encourages his full-backs or wing-backs to push high up the pitch to provide width, which leaves the team susceptible to quick counters, especially in a three-back system with not so much recovery speed.                Furthermore, there is a perceived lack of depth in the goalkeeping department, with the squad lacking a competent, truly world-class, "clutch" shot-stopper who can single-handedly make a difference in a competition like this.

Key player: Viktor Gyökeres

The year 2026 proved why Arsenal spent approximately $85 million for Viktor Gyökeres last summer and why Sweden can almost blindly rely on him to deliver them the goods in the World Cup after a series of magnificent performances in the playoffs back in March, which helped them be on the plane to North America. His hat-trick ripped Ukraine apart and if it was not enough, the winner against Poland showed plenty of reasons why defences will be worried about him. A much-changed striker, considering he failed to find the net even once before the playoffs in the qualifiers, was hugely helped by the change of manager. No player has scored more Premier League goals than him in 2026, now starting to anchor his role for his club, helping them in the Premier League and Champions League charge. He could arrive at the World Cup as a double winner, which would be a huge confidence boost and great news for Sweden, as he will be raring to fire in big games more than ever.

Manager: Graham Potter

Graham Potter has done a magnificent job in turning a battered team that had little hope of making the World Cup into believers of achieving that success. Taking charge when the side had forgotten to score and then helping them to fire and an eventual return to winning ways in such a short span of time is magnificent in every way, which is hard to replicate in international football. To top it off, Sweden managed to seal World Cup qualification under his watch with a comeback in the playoffs, showing his tactical intelligence, in-game management and above all being a successful man-manager in restoring cohesiveness in the dressing room.

Potter’s managerial genius was reflected very early in his career when he did a fabulous job at the Swedish club Östersunds FK, taking them from the fourth to the first division, winning the Svenska Cupen and also reaching the knockout stage of the Europa League sensationally. Then came his most famous period at Brighton, his four years there built the foundation of the Seagulls to be a top side in the Premier League. However, his nightmarish period at Chelsea and West Ham let his legacy down a little bit. Now back at the nation where it all started, the English manager seeks a chance at a redemption arc.

How will Sweden Lineup at the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Sweden Predicted Lineup for FIFA World Cup 2026

The Sweden team has mostly played in Graham Potter’s agile 3-4-2-1 system, especially in the playoffs, but it can also change to a back four if necessary. However, the manager is likely to stick with the formula that is working with the team, looking better in transition with Gyökeres leading up front and two floating forwards behind. Aleksandar Isak has failed to hit his heights at Newcastle in Liverpool, as he spent most of the time on the sidelines with constant injury problems, spending just 1,038 minutes on the pitch. His 225 minutes in World Cup qualifiers for Sweden did not yield any result as he failed to score and his partnership with Gyökeres has been disappointing, so Potter is likely sticking with one striker. Anthony Elanga, with his pace and Benjamin Nygren, with his creativity, will hope to assist the Arsenal man upfront as Roony Bardghji of Barcelona misses out on World Cup selection. The back three is likely to be Gustaf Lagerbielke and one of Isak Hien or Carl Starfelt, partnering the veteran Victor Lindelöf.

Sweden FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

Sweden will begin their 2026 World Cup journey at Guadalupe against the easiest opponent on paper, considering the other members in the group, the African side Tunisia, before the two crunching fixtures against the Netherlands and Japan. However, no fixture is easy in the World Cup tournament and particularly in a group like this. Tunisia will prove a hard nut to crack, as they will sit deep, keep a solidity and make it harder for a team which likes hitting opponents on transition. While the Netherlands and Japan’s style of play might suit  Potter’s men, their pedigree in going forward is set to trouble an already leaky Swedish defence. Hence, the Blue and Yellow have their work cut out and might face problems clinching even the third spot in the group. However, Sweden is in a joyous period under Graham Potter, who took them out of dark days and their lethal attack should be good enough to take them to the Round of 32. Anything beyond that will require the stability of their backline, which is worrying at the moment.
