Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City preview

Two Premier League heavyweights clash on Sunday as Tottenham Hotspur host Manchester City in north London. It’s a rare moment where even rivals Arsenal will be backing Spurs, hoping City drop points in the title race. City, however, arrive determined to stay right on Arsenal’s heels at the top of the Premier League table. Thomas Frank's Spurs are currently 14th in the table with 33 points, while Pep Guardiola's city are 2nd with 46, just behind Mikel Arteta's side.

Current team form: Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester City have steadied the ship after heavy defeats to Manchester United and Bodø/Glimt, responding with back-to-back clean-sheet wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Galatasaray. While confidence has lifted, Pep Guardiola knows City can’t afford further slip-ups if they are to edge Arsenal to the Premier League title.

Tottenham Hotspur have troubled City in recent years, winning three of their last five meetings, including August’s reverse fixture. However, domestic form has dipped under Thomas Frank, with Spurs winless in their last five league games, and their last victory coming against Crystal Palace on 28 December. Despite sitting fourth in the Champions League, pressure is mounting due to the disastrous league form, and Spurs fans approach Sunday with growing concern.

Tottenham Team News

Micky van de Ven is a doubt for Sunday after missing the midweek win over Eintracht Frankfurt, with Thomas Frank describing him as “touch and go.” The defender has trained in recent days, though, and could still be involved against Erling Haaland and Manchester City.

Tottenham’s injury list remains lengthy, however. Eight first-team players are unavailable, including defenders Ben Davies and Pedro Porro. Further forward, key names like Lucas Bergvall, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison are all sidelined, leaving Spurs stretched heading into a tough test.

There is some encouragement for Spurs, with Dominic Solanke continuing to build momentum as he sharpens his fitness. The forward has scored twice in his last three appearances and could be rewarded with a start on Sunday, potentially edging ahead of Randal Kolo Muani in attack.

Manchester City Team News

Manchester City will be without Jérémy Doku, who picked up a minor injury midweek and is set to miss the Spurs clash, though his absence isn’t expected to be long-term. Fellow winger Savinho is also sidelined.

Defensive problems persist, with Joško Gvardiol, Rúben Dias and John Stones all unavailable, while Mateo Kovačić misses out in midfield. On the plus side, Rodri returns from suspension, and winter signings Marc Guéhi and Antoine Semenyo are available again after sitting out the Galatasaray game.

Predicted line-ups

Manchester City expected 11:

Donnarumma, Nunes, Khusanov, Guéhi, O’Reilly, Rodri, Semenyo, Reijnders, Silva, Cherki, Haaland.

Tottenham Hotspur expected 11:

Vicario, Spence, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie, Palhinha, Gallagher; Odobert, Simons, Tel, Solanke.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Manchester City: Final opinion and score prediction

Considering the current form of Manchester City and Spurs struggling under Thomas Frank, and the majority would undoubtedly predict a Manchester City thrashing of Spurs with Erling Haaland probably scoring a goal or 2. Another major boost for City is that January signings Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guéhi weren't a part of their mid-week Champions League game, and hence they'll both be fully fit and fresh for this game at their 100%. All factors point towards an easy win here.

However, we have a feeling that Thomas Frank's Spurs side could end up getting something from this game. The 2 main reasons we are saying this is due to the impressive record Spurs has against City in recent meetings, as Tottenham have won 3 of their last 4 games against Pep Guardiola's side. We are boldly going to go for a draw here.

Score prediction: Manchester City 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur
