Vinicius Jr Stats Before and After Mbappe Joined Real Madrid

The arrival of Kylian Mbappé at Real Madrid was supposed to create one of the most frightening attacks in world football. Instead, the partnership has raised questions about Vinícius Júnior's role, output and suitability alongside the French superstar.

The numbers reveal an interesting contrast. Before Mbappé arrived, Vinícius was becoming the undisputed attacking leader at Madrid. Since then, his goalscoring numbers have dropped significantly, although there was a notable recovery in 2025–26.

Vinicius Was Madrid's Main Man Before Mbappe

The 2023–24 season was arguably the clearest indication of Vinícius' importance to Real Madrid's attack.

In La Liga, the Brazilian recorded:

Appearances: 26

Goals: 15

Assists: 5

Goal contributions: 20

Those numbers are particularly impressive considering he made only 22 starts. His 15 goals and five assists gave him a direct hand in 20 league goals.

More importantly, Vinícius was increasingly becoming the player Madrid relied upon to make the difference in the final third. With Karim Benzema gone, the Brazilian had greater attacking responsibility and looked increasingly comfortable as the team's primary superstar.

Vinicius' Numbers Dropped After Mbappe Arrived

Mbappé joined Real Madrid ahead of the 2024–25 season, immediately becoming another focal point of the attack.

Vinícius' La Liga numbers subsequently fell to:

Appearances: 30

Goals: 11

Assists: 8

Goal contributions: 19

The contrast is striking. Vinícius scored four fewer goals despite playing four more league matches. His total goal contributions also fell slightly from 20 to 19.

However, it would be unfair to suggest that Vinícius suddenly became a poor player. His assist numbers actually increased, and injuries and tactical changes also affected his season. The bigger question was whether Madrid had found the right attacking structure for two superstar forwards.

Mbappe, Meanwhile, Was Brilliant

While Vinícius' goals dropped, Mbappé exploded onto the La Liga scene.

In his debut league season, the Frenchman produced:

Appearances: 34

Goals: 31

Assists: 3

Goal contributions: 34

Mbappé finished as La Liga's top scorer and won the Pichichi Trophy, scoring 31 goals in his first Spanish league campaign.

That immediately changed the hierarchy of Madrid's attack. Mbappé became the team's primary goalscoring outlet, while Vinícius had to share attacking responsibility rather than operating as the undisputed main man.

Vinicius Bounced Back in 2025–26

The following season provided an important counterargument to the idea that Vinícius was simply declining.

In La Liga in 2025–26, he registered:

Appearances: 36

Goals: 16

Assists: 5

Goal contributions: 21

His 16 goals represented a significant improvement from the 11 he scored in 2024–25.

Mbappé, however, remained Madrid's dominant goalscorer. He scored 25 goals in 31 La Liga appearances, winning the Pichichi for a second consecutive season.

So while Vinícius' numbers recovered, Mbappé continued to occupy the central goalscoring role.

The Bigger Problem Is Their Balance Together

The issue isn't simply individual statistics. Real Madrid have also struggled at times to find the right balance between Vinícius and Mbappé.

Both players are devastating when attacking space, but Madrid can become vulnerable when possession is lost and their forwards do not contribute enough defensively. Opponents have consequently been able to target spaces left behind by Madrid's attacking structure.

That makes the Vinícius-Mbappé partnership a tactical question as much as a statistical one.

What About the Current Season?

The early numbers in 2026–27 provide another interesting comparison. Vinícius currently has one goal and three assists in five La Liga appearances, while Mbappé has seven goals and two assists in seven matches.

José Mourinho has also publicly discussed the need for Vinícius to improve defensively, while young winger Yan Diomande has impressed enough to provide genuine competition for places. Mourinho has said Diomande can play in Vinícius' position and has highlighted his potential.

Final Verdict: Should Vinicius Leave Real Madrid?

The statistics do suggest that Vinícius has lost some of his attacking dominance since Mbappé arrived. His league goals fell from 15 to 11 in the first season alongside the Frenchman before recovering to 16 the following campaign.

However, the evidence does not prove that Mbappé's arrival alone caused a decline. Vinícius remains an elite attacker, and his 2025–26 numbers show that he can still produce at a very high level.

The real issue is whether Madrid can build a system that maximises both superstars without sacrificing defensive balance. If that cannot be achieved, a separation could eventually benefit both Vinícius and Real Madrid.

For now, though, the numbers suggest a more complicated story than simple regression: Mbappé has become Madrid's main goalscorer, while Vinícius is still searching for the role that made him the team's attacking leader.
