Hayden Hackney Transfer News

A new transfer report has claimed that Manchester United are looking to sign Middlesbrough's talented 23 year old midfielder Hayden Hackney, although they will be facing competition from other Premier League clubs as well. Hackney is a central midfielder who also operates as a deep-lying playmaker thanks to his composure and quality on the ball. He has become one of Middlesbrough’s most important players as they push for promotion, currently sitting second in the Championship. The England youth international has made 32 league appearances this season, contributing four goals and four assists, underlining his growing influence in Boro’s midfield.

Hayden Hackney at Middlesbrough

Hayden Hackney rose through Middlesbrough’s academy after being spotted at local club Redcar Town and signed his first pro deal at just 17. He made his senior debut in 2021 and gained valuable experience during a loan spell at Scunthorpe United, despite a setback with a suspension.

His breakthrough came under Michael Carrick in 2022–23, when he became a regular starter, won Boro’s Young Player of the Year, and earned a Championship award nomination. Hackney has since signed a deal till 2027, captained the club, and scored key goals, including a famous winner against Chelsea in the EFL Cup semi-final.

What new transfer report says about Man Utd's interest in Hayden Hackney

A report from Teamtalk states that Manchester United are continuing to track Hayden Hackney as they plan their midfield targets for the summer, with several other Premier League clubs also interested. The 23-year-old has been on United’s radar for a while, with scouts believing he has the potential to grow into a reliable Premier League player.

Michael Carrick’s past work with Hackney at Middlesbrough adds another layer to the story, especially if Carrick remains involved at Old Trafford. Boro blocked a January move despite strong interest from Nottingham Forest, but the situation is expected to change after the season. With Middlesbrough pushing for promotion, Hackney is widely tipped to be in the Premier League next season, either by going up with Boro or via a big summer transfer.

Our opinion on Manchester United potentially signing Hayden Hackney

There is absolutely no doubt that Hayden Hackney is a talented player with huge potential, and Man Utd need no add numbers in midfield as well, especially with the likes of Casemiro leaving after the end of the season. While Hackney would in no way be a Casemiro replacement, he is a great player that can add much added depth and youth to the side. It would be a great deal if United can get the player.

However, the other side to this is that United have been one of the worst Premier League clubs when it comes to developing young players into world-class talent. That is undoubtedly something Hackney and his agent should be worried about. With reports also claiming that other Premier League clubs are interested in the player, we personally think it would be better for the player to join another Premier League club for his development and then make a big move to a top European club in a year or 2.
