It is becoming increasingly difficult to imagine Barcelona's starting XI without Xavi Espart. The teenage defender has played every minute of Barcelona's La Liga campaign so far under Hansi Flick, starting all four matches and already registering two assists.
Espart has been one of the biggest surprises of Barcelona's excellent start to the season. After impressing during preseason, the youngster has operated in three different positions at a remarkably high level, but his performances at left-back have been particularly eye-catching. His emergence has even forced Flick to think creatively about how to fit one of his preferred players, João Cancelo, into the team.
Born in Barcelona on May 21, 2007, Espart is just 19 years old and stands at 1.75m (5ft 9in). He is a versatile defender who can play as a right-back, left-back or defensive midfielder.
His attacking ability, versatility and maturity at such a young age have already created comparisons to Lamine Yamal. While it is far too early to suggest Espart will reach Yamal's extraordinary level, Barcelona may have discovered a similarly special young talent, this time on the defensive side of the team.
Who Is Xavi Espart?
Xavi Espart, whose full name is Xavier Espart Font, is a Barcelona academy product who joined La Masia in 2015 after previously playing for Vilassar de Mar. He progressed through Barcelona's youth system before making his senior breakthrough with Barcelona Atlètic.
Espart made his Barcelona Atlètic debut in August 2024 and went on to make 20 league appearances for the reserve side across two seasons. He also signed a contract with Barcelona until 2028 in August 2025.
His senior breakthrough came in the 2025/26 campaign. Espart made his Champions League debut against Newcastle United in March 2026 before making his La Liga debut against Sevilla four days later.
Now, he has officially been promoted to Barcelona's first-team squad and wears the No. 12 shirt.
Espart's Incredible Versatility
One of the biggest reasons Espart has caught Flick's attention is his versatility.
Although he has developed primarily as a full-back, Espart has also played extensively in midfield. He can operate as a right-back, left-back or defensive midfielder, giving Flick several tactical possibilities within the same player.
That versatility was particularly evident during his development at Barcelona and with Spain's youth teams. At the 2026 UEFA European Under-19 Championship, Espart returned to a central midfield role and helped Spain win the tournament without conceding a single goal. He scored twice and registered three assists during the competition before being selected for the Team of the Tournament.
For a manager such as Flick, having a player capable of seamlessly switching positions is invaluable.
Why Has Espart Become So Important for Barcelona?
The most impressive aspect of Espart's emergence is that he is not simply surviving at senior level.
He is influencing games.
Through Barcelona's first four La Liga matches of the 2026/27 season, Espart has played all 360 minutes, starting every game and producing two assists.
That is remarkable production for a 19-year-old defender.
His attacking instincts are particularly exciting. Espart is comfortable pushing forward, joining attacks and contributing to Barcelona's possession game. He is also capable of operating as an inverted full-back, moving into midfield during possession to provide an additional passing option and help Barcelona control the tempo.
This makes him particularly well suited to Barcelona's football.
A Defender Who Plays Like a Midfielder
Perhaps the most exciting thing about Espart is that his footballing education is clearly visible.
Rather than being a traditional full-back whose primary responsibility is defending, he looks comfortable receiving the ball, progressing play and making decisions in central areas.
His passing, tactical discipline and composure have been identified as some of his major strengths. Flick has even compared his profile to former Barcelona and Bayern Munich great Philipp Lahm, another defender renowned for his intelligence and ability to influence games from different positions.
That comparison should not be taken as a prediction that Espart will reach Lahm's level.
But it highlights the type of player Barcelona believe they have on their hands.
Why Espart Is Being Compared to Lamine Yamal
The Lamine Yamal comparison is less about playing style and more about trajectory.
Yamal became a first-team regular at an extraordinarily young age because his technical ability and footballing intelligence were far beyond what would normally be expected from a teenager.
Espart is beginning to show similar characteristics.
At only 19, he is already trusted by Flick in a demanding Barcelona system, has demonstrated that he can play multiple positions and is contributing directly to goals. Most importantly, he does not look overwhelmed by the level.
That is what makes the potential so exciting.
Barcelona may already have their generational attacking talent in Yamal. Espart could potentially become the defensive equivalent, a homegrown player capable of becoming one of the best players in his position.
Of course, it is far too early for such definitive claims. Four league appearances are an incredibly small sample, and Espart still has plenty to prove.
But the early signs are extraordinary.
Xavi Espart Could Solve Barcelona's Left-Back Problem
Espart's emergence also creates an interesting selection dilemma for Flick.
Barcelona already have João Cancelo, a player the manager clearly values, but Espart's performances have made him increasingly difficult to drop. The teenager has effectively claimed the left-back position at the beginning of the season despite being naturally more accustomed to the right side and midfield.
That speaks volumes about how quickly he has adapted.
Rather than simply being another promising academy player waiting for occasional opportunities, Espart is already forcing Flick to adjust his plans.
And that may be the clearest indication yet of his potential.
Barcelona May Have Found Their Next Defensive Superstar
Xavi Espart still has a long way to go.
He needs to maintain his performances, develop physically, become more consistent defensively and prove that he can perform at this level against Europe's best teams.
But Barcelona's latest academy graduate has already shown enough to make supporters extremely excited.
Lamine Yamal has shown Barcelona that a teenager can become the centrepiece of a world-class team. Xavi Espart now has the opportunity to follow a similar path at the other end of the pitch.
It may be premature to call him Barcelona's next generational defender.
But if his first few matches under Hansi Flick are anything to go by, Xavi Espart could be the next La Masia superstar, and Barcelona's answer to Lamine Yamal in defence.
