The hosts India reached the semi-final of the Hero Asian Champions Trophy Chennai 2023 after beating South Korea in a 3-2 thriller on the fourth day of the competition (7 August). Earlier in the day, Malaysia became the first team to book the semi-final spot in the six-team competition.

Actually, India qualified for the semi-final after Pakistan beat China during the second game of the day.

At the end of the fourth day, Team India is leading the table with 10 points, while Malaysia are in the second spot with nine points. While China (one point) have no chance to manage the top four spots, Korea (five points) and Pakistan (five points) are in better situations than Japan (two points) for the semi-final qualifications.

Q1 (Final Scoreline): India 1 (Nilakanta Sharma 6’) — Korea 1 (Kim Sunghyun 12’)

In the sixth minute, Nilakanta Sharma opened India’s account with a brilliant field goal. Six minutes later, the South Korean team equalised after Kim Sunghyun fired with a field goal.


Q2 (Final Scoreline): India 2 (Harmanpreet Singh 23’) — Korea 1


In the 23rd minute, India earned two back-to-back penalty corners, where captain Harmanpreet Singh scored from the second one to regain the hosts’ lead.

Q3 (Final Scoreline): India 3 (Mandeep Singh 33’) — Korea 1


The tournament hosts managed the 3-1 lead at the end of the third quarter, thanks to Mandeep Singh’s field goal in the 33rd minute.  


Q4 (Final Scoreline): India 3 — Korea 2 (Jihun Yang 58’)


Captain Harmanpreet Singh failed to score from a penalty stroke in the second minute of the quarter as the opponent goalkeeper saved his shot.

In almost the last ten minutes, the Korean team dominated and earned nine penalty corners. In the 58th minute, Jihun Yang made the scoreline 3-2 by utilising the last penalty corner of the match.
