It became the most talked-about Kolkata Derby for generations and sent shockwaves that are even felt today whenever the game is mentioned. One of the most symbolic games in derby history, it was played on 30 September 1975. To make the humiliation absolute for the Green and Maroon faithful, the match was hosted right at the Mohun Bagan Ground, etching an internal scar for them.
The context made the result even more extraordinary. East Bengal entered the final during a period of remarkable dominance and were unbeaten against Mohun Bagan for an extraordinary 1,932 days. The IFA Shield itself was also within reach of a fourth consecutive triumph. The Red and Gold Brigade was managed by the iconic figure of P.K. Banerjee. Meanwhile, Mohun Bagan was led by Bimal Ghosh and possessed a star-studded squad that included goalkeeper Bhaskar Ganguly, defender Subrata Bhattacharya, captain Sisir Guho, and striker Johor Das. However, they were taken aback by the events that unfolded that fateful day.
The rout began inside the opening minutes. Surajit Sengupta opened the scoring with a screamer before Shyam Thapa missed a penalty that could have doubled the advantage. The first arrived as early as the second minute, curling exquisitely past Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Shilton Paul into the top corner. The lightning struck twice in the 38th minute, with the custodian nicknamed ‘Bajpakhi’ or ‘the Eagle’ because of his extraordinary saves being beaten again from a spectacular curler in the same part of the net. The winger, as he has often done in his Mumbai City days, scored against his favourite opponent for their arch-rivals now to give the lead. In the blink of an eye, Edmund Lalrindika doubled the advantage. The Mariners had barely recovered from the first two blows when Edmund struck again in the 22nd minute, unleashing a storm which their rivals weren’t prepared for. Suddenly, a final that had been expected to be fiercely contested and predicted to be a close one tilted dramatically towards East Bengal.
Mohun Bagan did find a response through Manvir Singh in the 33rd minute, briefly giving the Mariners hope of an extraordinary comeback. However, East Bengal refused to let the momentum shift. It was that man again, Edmund, who converted from a set-piece right before half-time, restoring the three-goal advantage but most importantly clinching a historical hat-trick. He became only the second player in East Bengal history to score three goals in this fixture, after Baichung’s heroics in the other 4-1 victory in 1997, but he was the first player to do so in a Kolkata Derby played in the Durand Cup. Antonio Lopez Habas' defensive masterclass and explosive counter-attacks nullified the Mariners completely, ending East Bengal's 22-year wait for the Durand Cup, winning it over their rivals back then as well and bringing them level with Mohun Bagan’s record 17 titles in the competition. It became the biggest winning margin in this fixture in the Durand Cup final. The significance of the victory goes beyond the scoreline. East Bengal had begun the tournament by losing to their rivals.
