The 13th edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) is set to kick off on 10th October 2026, with the highly anticipated season beginning with a double-header. The 2019 ISL winners Bengaluru FC will play the curtain-raising fixture against Sporting Club Delhi at Kanteerava Stadium, while the evening clash will repeat the 2015 final between FC Goa and Chennaiyin FC at Fatorda. The 2026-27 season will see a new dawn, with the majority ownership of the league now belonging to the clubs, about 80% of it, while the governance lies with the federation, the AIFF. The league will return to a full-fledged season running until May after a shortened campaign last time due to uncertainty about its future back then. 13 clubs will take part in the competition this season, as for the first time, a promoted side from the second division, Diamond Harbour FC, will not join the rest in the top flight after failing to provide the participation fee. They are effectively relegated, so no other team will face the drop this season. This is also the season when the playoffs will make a return, with the top six teams qualifying for it.
However, there will be new faces in the league this season, with Churchill Brothers finally set to play in the ISL after acquiring the licence of Jamshedpur FC, who closed down first-team operations due to non-payment of fees, for a nominal token consideration of just ₹100. After a long wait, East Bengal FC finally got their hands on the ISL trophy last season, ending their 22-year wait for a top-flight title and they will be keen to become just the second side to retain their honour with Antonio Lopez Habas on their side. Rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant are aiming to regain their lost dominance, whereas Mumbai City FC and FC Goa will be among the other contenders. Northeast United FC will want to spring a surprise, now also sharing their base with Manipur, as is Chennaiyin FC, Punjab FC, Inter Kashi and SC Delhi. Meanwhile, Kerala Blasters will have new ownership when the season begins.
The new ISL season will be more weekend-focused as the majority of the games will be played over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. About 67% of the 78 games in the first half of the league season will be played during these days, adhering to the requests of the fans. Most of the weekends are double-headers, with fixtures kicking off at 5 PM and 7:30 PM (IST). From November, each day in the schedule will also feature two games. The 2026-27 season will pause between November 7 and 20 due to the international break. Defending champions East Bengal will not play in the first round of games owing to AFC commitments, so their title defence starts against Churchill Brothers at Fatorda on 18 October 2026. All teams have confirmed their home venues except Inter Kashi. The Phase 1 fixtures have been released for the second half of the campaign and the playoff schedule will be released later.
