Mohun Bagan lost their two-year title defence to their rivals East Bengal last season, albeit on goal difference, as the Mariners prepared to reclaim their dominance in the 2026-27 ISL season under new management. The Green and Maroon did not get what they expected under one of the league’s star coaches, Sergio Lobera. Surprisingly, the team played more lacklustre football than entertaining and even though they forced the title decider to the final day, it was not to be. Hence, the club made significant changes to transform the squad for the new season. Some of the old guard were replaced, while eye-catching signings like snapping up Miguel Ferreira from Red and Gold and securing the signature of star winger Lallianzuala Chhangte showed promise. The most crucial switch came on the managerial front as the club hired Panagotis Dimpleris after his excellent work at Punjab FC to lead the Kolkata giants.
However, the Greek mastermind failed in his first test as Mohun Bagan went down 4-1 in the Kolkata Durand Cup final, raising questions about his appointment. It is a challenge for him and the squad to bounce back strongly, although they did win the Calcutta League after eight years with a mixture of junior and senior team members under the tutelage of assistant boss Bastob Ray, in the upcoming full-fledged campaign after a truncated one last time. The Mariners will have a difficult start with a trip to Guwahati to face NorthEast United on 12 October 2026. The first home game of the season for the Mariners does not come until 26 October, after the Durga Puja festivities in the city, with Chennaiyin FC visiting them at the Salt Lake.
They also end the opening month of the season with back-to-back home games, facing coach Panos’s former employers Punjab FC just four days later. The gigantic fixture in the league calendar, the Kolkata derby, will come a month later as Mohun Bagan will seek revenge against their arch rivals for their embarrassing defeat in the Durand Cup final and their loss of dominance last season. Then the side will face a crunching schedule in December with Bengaluru FC, Mumbai City FC and FC Goa in three straight games before ṭhe end of the year. The final game of the first half of the ISL 2026-27 campaign is a home match against Kerala Blasters, now under new ownership, which will also be the first game of the New Year 2027.
