Mohun Bagan Super Giant went the extra mile in the 2024-25 season as they won the ISL Shield for consecutive years (See here: Mohun Bagan Records in ISL 2023-24 Shield), in a dominating fashion this time. Unlike last season where the decider happened on the final day of the league stage, the team clinched success with two games remaining and finishing 10 points clear at the top. It was an unprecedented showing from the Mariners who claimed 52 points from 22 points by registering 16 wins and losing just twice all season. The Green and Maroons had the league’s best return scoring 43 goals this season and conceding just 14. High-profile signing Jamie Maclaren scored 10 goals to be the top-scorer for the side.
However, like the previous instances, the Kolkata giants did not have smooth sailing right from the off. The management let go of Antonio Lopez Habas who gave the side their first ISL Shield because of a disappointing loss in the ISL final, appointing 2016 ISL trophy-winning coach with ATK Jose Molina. Aware of his managerial profile, the Spaniard looked like an ideal choice but the team-building took a hit when reliable centre-back Anwar Ali cut ties with the club over a contract dispute taking the headlines rather than the fascinating new arrivals. Mohun Bagan seems to feel his absence with defensive vulnerabilities causing the side to fall from an advantageous position including failure to retain the Durand Cup title reaching consecutive finals.
The issues persisted in the league season as they picked up just one win from the first three games and suffered a humiliating 3-0 loss to Bengaluru FC. That defeat prompted the Mariners to bounce back strongly and they lost only one more match in a display of strength, grit and determination. The foreign centre-back partnership of Tom Aldred and Alberto Rodriguez became the best pairing in the league while the frontline showered goals with six games seeing three or more goals scored. The 135-year-old club roared towards another league title in style creating more records in the process even beating the standards they set last season. Their campaign has sparked debate among fans about whether this is the best ISL side in the 11 years of the competition. Mohun Bagan will also play in the AFC Champions League 2 for back-to-back seasons.
Here are all the records set by Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the 2024-25 season:
Remarkable feat
Mohun Bagan became the first team to defend the ISL Shield successfully. The only other team to come close to the feat was Mumbai City FC last season, highlighting the magnitude of this success. The Mariners also equalled the record with the Islanders for winning the most ISL Shield titles with two.
The Best
Mohun Bagan keeps shining on their tag of being the most successful club in Indian football history by winning their record-extending seven league titles. After winning the National Football League three times and the I-League two times, they have now won the ISL Shield more than once.
Sheer Dominance
With this success, the Mariners have won an ISL trophy in three consecutive seasons. Their first trophy since joining the league in 2020 was winning the ISL trophy beating Bengaluru FC through a penalty shootout in an entertaining final hosted in Goa. The team followed it up with their first ISL Shield victory in 2024 and successfully defended the title this year.
Untouched
Mohun Bagan earned the most points in an ISL season, with 52*, beating their record from last season (48). They are the first team in ISL history to breach the 50-point mark. The team also had the best point difference in achieving the title from the runners-up with 10.
Winning masters
Likewise, the Green and Maroons have beaten their previous record of most wins in a season with 16 wins* (earlier 15) averaging 2.36 points per game with two more to go. To compare, the team averaged 2.18 points per game last season
Fortress
One of the big factors behind the success of Jose Molina’s side was their undefeated form at Salt Lake Stadium. They won the Shield title without losing a single home game, setting the record for earning the most points at home in ISL history with 31*. The team also registered the most home wins in ISL history with nine.
Unbeatable
Mohun Bagan registered the fewest defeats in the season, with two losses, matching the records of ATK in 2016 and Mumbai City set in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 campaigns.
The side also matched their tally of the fewest defeats in away games in a season, set in 2021-22 and 2023-24.
Captain Fantastic
Captain Subhasish Bose set the record for the most goals by a defender in a single ISL season, scoring six. Alongside him, centre-back Alberto Rodriguez chipped in with five goals, the second-most in the list.
Serial winner
Greg Stewart set an impeccable record of being the only player to win the ISL Shield with three different clubs. The Scottish playmaker won his first Shield with Jamshedpur FC in his first season in the league in 2022 joined by another success the following year. The only time he did not lift the Shield was in 2024.
Rock solid
Shaking off their early defensive vulnerabilities, Mohun Bagan became the first team to keep the most clean sheets in the season with 14* with goalkeeper Vishal Kaith becoming the first goalkeeper to do so in ISL history. Molina’s men are the first team to go six straight games without conceding a goal.
Set-piece king
The Mariners managed 43* goals this season with half of the strikes coming through set-pieces. They recorded a massive 20* goals through dead ball situations setting a new record in the process.
