The carnival of cricket thirteenth edition of IPL 2020 is all set to begin from 19, September. All teams are gearing up for the new season of IPL. Mumbai Indians is the most successful team in the history of IPL. Under the astute leadership of Rohit Sharma MI have won a total four trophies in the year 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.

Let’s see what’s in store for Mumbai Indians this year:

New Additions:

Chris Lynn (2 crores), Saurabh Tiwary (50 lakhs), Digvijay Deshmukh, Prince Balwant Rai Singh, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Mohsin Khan.

Players bought in: SIX

Full squad:

Rohit Sharma, Sherfane Rutherford, Suryakumar Yadav, Anmolpreet Singh, Chris Lynn, Saurabh Tiwary, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga, Mitchell McClenaghan, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Mohsin Khan, Fabian Allen, Prince Balwant Rai Singh, Digvijay Deshmukh, Hardik Pandya, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Anukul Roy, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Ishan Kishan, Quinton de Kock, Aditya Tare.

Strengths:

In the midway of 2013 IPL Rohit took over the captaincy from Ricky ponting and from there onwards he emerged as a one of the finest leaders in the cricketing fraternity. His calm nature and ability to lead the team with utmost ease in pressure situations is one of the success mantras for Mumbai Indians over the years.

The inclusion of Chris Lynn in the setup will give MI solidity at top of the order. Lynn along with Rohit at the top can demolish many quality bowling attacks and maximise the use of batting power play. Pandya brothers along with Pollard has finished off many games for MI in the past.

Jasprit Bumrah is the leader of MI’s bowling attack. Currently he is the best death bowler in international cricket. Mitchell McClenaghan, Trent Boult and Nathan Coulter-Nile will provide more depth in the bowling for Mumbai Indians.

Weaknesses:

Lack of experience in the spin bowling department can become a weakness for MI this year. Krunal Pandya turned out to be a good utility player for MI over the years with bat and ball but he cannot be used as a regular off spinner.

Rahul Chahar turned out to be a good find for MI and he performed well for them in last year but he too has very less experience in his side. Ankul Roy is another player to watch out for in this year’s IPL. He played a big role when Indian Under-19 team won the WC in New Zealand in 2018.

Opportunities:

Anmolpreet Singh a young lad from Punjab had a really good domestic season last year. He has got really good opportunity in his hands this year. Hardik Pandya last represented Indian team in November 2019. He has got another opportunity this year to prove his mettle.

Hardik and pollard’s performance will certainly decide the faith of MI in this year’s IPL. A successful IPL season for Ishan Kishan can certainly put him in a contention for India’s limited overs squad.

Surkyakumar Yadav has performed exceedingly well for MI over the past two years. A good IPL season will certainly put him in a contention for India’s T20 international squad.

Threats:

MI performed really poorly in first leg of 2014 IPL season which was also played in UAE. They lost five consecutive games. This can remain a psychological disadvantage for MI going into the new season.

Pollard didn’t perform up to the expectations last year. His form will be certainly a worry for MI. Lasith Malinga had a decent IPL last season. If he shows poor form or gets injured there is enough backup for him in the form of Trent Bolt and Nathan Coulter-Nile.

Hardik didn’t have a match practice since November 2019. He needs to get back into the groove at the start of the tournament. If all things fall in place Rohit Sharma can certainly win another IPL trophy for MI.
