In a ten-team league with a number of quality teams, it is incredibly difficult to pick a top four. However, after some thought, here are our top four with the key reasons behind the picks.

Note: The below top four is in no particular order

Rajasthan Royals:

A superb auction. The Royals have their bases covered from 1-11. Their top order consisting of Jos Buttler, Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal is dangerous. Their finishing, which includes the likes of Shimron Hetmyer, Jimmy Neesham and Riyan Parag, looks good on paper.

And, of course, add the experience and quality of Trent Boult, R Aswhin and Yuzvendra Chahal in a strong-looking bowling lineup. If the Royals miss the playoffs, it will be a big disappointment given the team they have on paper.

Full Squad: Sanju Samson ( C ), Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaisawal, R. Ashwin, Trent Boult, Shimron Hetmeyer, Devdutt Paddikal, Riyan Prayag, KC Cariappa, Prasidh Krishna, Yuzvendra Chahal, Navdeep Saini, Obed McCoy, Anunay Singh, Kuldeep Sen, Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel, Tejas Baroka, Kuldip Yadav, Shubham Garhwal, James Neesham, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Rassie van der Dussen, Daryl Mitchell, Benny Howell

Chennai Super Kings:

It is a brave call for anyone to leave CSK out of this season’s top four. They have qualified for the playoffs in every season they have participated in India. While the loss of Faf du Plessis and Shardul Thakur is significant, the depth and strength of their lineup and excellent leadership should hold them in good stead.

However, overall, the team is still potent amidst a few gaps. They have 3 good all-rounders, a brilliant opener, a solid middle-order, and decent bowling options. With MS Dhoni, nothing is impossible for the Men in Yellow.

Full Squad : Ravindra Jadeja ( C ), MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dwayne Bravo, Ambati Rayudu, KM Asif, Tushar Deshpande, Deepak Chahar, Shivam Dube, Maheesh Theekshana, Rajvardhan Hangarkekar, Simarjeet Singh, Devon Conway, Dwaine Pretorius, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Subhranshu Senapati, Mukesh Choudhary, Prashant Solanki, C Hari Nishaanth, N Jagadeesan, Chris Jordan, K Bhagath Varma

Delhi Capitals:

When David Warner and Mitchell Marsh arrive in town, the Capitals will have a top four of Prithvi Shaw, Warner, Marsh and Rishabh Pant. This is one of the best top orders in the league, with a mix of dynamic play and the left-right hand combinations.

With the ball, Shardul Thakur promises to be a valuable purchase, partnered by the economical Anrich Nortje and Axar Patel to form a solid bowling core. Also, Ricky Ponting’s smarts is a big advantage for the Capitals as they aim for their elusive title.

They have David Warner and Prithvi Shaw at the top, Mitchell Marsh, Axar Patel and Rovman Powell as all-rounders, Rishabh Pant and Sarfaraz Khan as finishers. The bowling is good too with Anrich Nortje, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav in the mix.

Full Squad: Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, Anrich Nortje, David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Ashwin Hebbar, Sarfaraz Khan, Kamlesh Nagarkoti, KS Bharat, Shardul Thakur, Mustafizur Rahman, Kuldeep Yadav, Mandeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Chetan Sakariya, Lalit Yadav, Ripal Patel, Yash Dhull, Rovman Powell, Pravin Dubey, Lungi Ngidi, Tim Seifert, Vicky Ostwal

Punjab Kings:

The Kings had one of the best auction performances earlier in 2022. They came into the mega auction with the biggest purse, and they have spent well with a formidable top four of Shikhar Dhawan, Liam Livingstone and Jonny Bairstow alongside the prolific Mayank Agarwal. Also, the likes of Shahrukh Khan and Odean Smith provide some excellent finishing potential down the order.

Importantly, the Kings look better with the ball. Kagiso Rabada is an outstanding purchase, and his partnership with Arshdeep Singh at the death will make for interesting viewing. Also, the likes of Rahul Chahar and Ishan Porel enter this tournament with plenty to prove.

Full Squad: Mayank Agarwal, Arshdeep Singh, Shikhar Dhawan, Kagiso Rabada, Jonny Bairstow, Shahrukh Khan, Harpreet Brar, Prabhsimran Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Ishan Porel, Rahul Chahar, Liam Livingstone, Odean Smith, Sandeep Sharma, Raj Bawa, Rishi Dhawan, Prerak Mankad, Vaibhav Arora, Writtick Chatterjee, Baltej Dhanda, Ansh Patel, Nathan Ellis, Atharva Taide, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Benny Howell
