Paris 2024 Olympics: Preeti Pawar secured India’s Asian Games 2023 boxing medal and a Summer Olympic quota

On Saturday (September 30), the 19-year-old Indian boxer Preeti Pawar fought against Zhaina Shekerbekova of Kazakhstan in the women’s 54kg Quarterfinals. Preeti won that battle by 4-1 by split decision as she advanced to the Semifinals to confirm a medal for the nation at the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2023.

On the previous day, Nikhat Zareen secured India’s first boxing medal at the Asian Games 2023 as well as confirmed India’s first boxing quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics after a quick dominating win against Jordan’s Hanan Nassar in the women’s 50kg boxing event.

Now, Preeti Pawar became the second Indian to confirm India’s boxing quota for the next Summer Olympics.

Paris 2024 Olympics boxing qualification process in the Asian Games 2023

While the Asian Games 2023 is a qualification part for the Paris 2024 Olympics boxing events, the best four players from every women’s Asiad boxing event, except from the 66kg and 75kg events, can secure a national quota in the respective boxing categories for the forthcoming Summer Olympics.

For the 66kg and 75kg events, only both finalists can book a national quota for the Paris 2024 Olympics, just like all the men's boxing categories events at the Asian Games 2023.

National Olympic Committees have the complete authority to decide on the national representative for the Paris 2024 Olympics boxing events. However, for every nation, only one boxer in each category is eligible to participate in the Summer Olympics.

Asian Games 2023: Lovlina Borgohain also confirmed one boxing medal for India

Also, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics bronze medalist, Lovlina Borgohain also confirmed another boxing medal for India after advancing to the Semifinals in the women’s 75kg category by defeating Republic of Korea’s Suyeon Seong by 5-0 in a Quarterfinal.

However, unlike Nikhat and Preeti, Lovlina needs to qualify for the Final to secure India’s boxing quota in her category for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
