Hosts and defending champions India lifted the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 trophy after thrashing New Zealand in the Final of the tournament at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday (8 March). India became the first team to win the trophy for three times.
After New Zealand chose to field first, India scored 255/5 in 20 overs. In reply, New Zealand were bowled out for only 159 runs in 19 overs, as India won by 96 runs.
Record partnership
Indian batters Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan set up the 105-run partnership for the second wicket.
It was the second-highest partnership for any wicket in the Final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The record is a 111-run partnership for the second wicket between the English batters Craig Kieswetter and Kevin Pietersen against Australia in the Final of the 2010 edition.
Top 3 batters with 50+ scores
The top three Indian batters scored 50+ runs. While the openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma scored 89 and 52 runs, respectively, the no.3 batter Ishan Kishan scored 54 runs. Sanju Samson also broke the record of highest individual score in a T20 World Cup Final of Marlon Samuels (85*)
It was the first time in T20 World Cup history that all the top three batters scored 50+ runs in the same innings.
Sanju Samson's record-breaking consecutive 50+ scores
Indian opener Sanju Samson recorded three consecutive 50+ scores by scoring 97*, 89, and 89 runs in the last three innings, finishing at the final of the tournament.
Sanju Samson became the seventh batter to record three consecutive 50+ scores in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup history, which is the record for most consecutive 50+ scores in the competition's history. The other six batters are Mahela Jayawardene (2010), Virat Kohli (2016-2021), Babar Azam (2021), KL Rahul (2021), Kusal Mendis (2026), and Sahibzada Farhan (2026).
After scoring 89 runs in the Semi-final against England, Sanju Samson scored another 89 in the Final against New Zealand. After Pakistan cricketer Shahid Afridi (2009) and Indian cricketer Virat Kohli (2014), Sanju became the third batter to record 50+ scores in both the semi-final and Final of the same T20 World Cup edition.
