The BCCI has revealed India’s 15-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with a blend of comeback stars, fresh faces, and injury setbacks shaping the squad. The series will get underway at Galle on August 15, preceded by a four-day practice match in Colombo from August 7.
The biggest miss is Washington Sundar, who misses out due to injury. Sundar arguably has been in his best form in Test cricket in the last year, and this is a big blow for the all-rounder and the Indian team. His match-winning hundred against England last year revealed his temperament and ability to pull India out of tough situations, while his all-round contributions in the recent Test against Afghanistan again highlighted his increasing importance in the longest format. With Sundar out of the picture, India loses a reliable tail-ender and a quality off-spinner who has delivered time and again when given an opportunity.
There is, however, good news in the form of Jasprit Bumrah's return. India's pace spearhead has been included in the squad for what could be his first Test appearance since November 2025. But his availability would depend on fitness clearance from the BCCI's Centre of Excellence, and selectors are being cautious due to his injury history. If fit, Bumrah’s return will bolster India’s pace attack ahead of an important overseas assignment.
Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is also back in the Test setup after missing the Afghanistan Test. His all-round ability with bat and ball, especially in spin-friendly conditions, could prove vital in the Sri Lanka series.
Meanwhile, Manav Suthar has held on to his place in the squad after an impressive performance against Afghanistan. The young left-arm spinner made the most of his opportunity and has won the confidence of selectors with another Test call-up.
The squad also has a new face in Saraansh Jain, who has gotten his maiden Test call-up. Coming into the squad as a cover for Sundar’s injury, the off-spinning all-rounder will be looking to make the best of his first opportunity at the highest level.
India’s squad is a blend of old and new talent, with experienced campaigners back, promising youngsters holding on to their places, and a debutant getting his maiden call-up. However, the absence of Washington Sundar, one of India’s most reliable Test all-rounders in recent times, will undoubtedly be one of the biggest talking points heading into the Sri Lanka tour.
