Although England had a hard time on the opening day of their India tour in 2023/24 for the five-match Test series, the former English Test captain Joe Root created a new history in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). The right-handed batter became the first player to score 4000 runs in WTC history.

The India vs England five-match 2023/24 Test series started on Thursday (25 January) morning with the Hyderabad Test. It is a crucial Test series for both teams as this series is a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-2025.

After winning the toss in the Hyderabad Test, England captain Ben Stokes decided to bat first. While England were bowled out for 246 runs on the first day of the Test match, the no.4 English batter Joe Root scored 29 runs in 60 balls with the help of one boundary.

Joe Root became the first cricketer to record 4000 WTC runs

During that short battle with the 29-run knock, Joe Root took his name into the record book by becoming the first batter in the ICC World Test Championship history to score 4000 runs. At the end of the innings, Root scored 4016 runs in 87 innings (48 matches) in the ICC WTC.

Only Australian cricketers Marnus Labuschagne (3797 runs) and Steven Smith (3338 runs) are the other players with 3000+ WTC runs.

During that short innings in the first innings of the 2024 Hyderabad Test, the English cricketer Joe Root also became the most runs-scorer in the history of India vs England Test cricket. While the legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was the previous record holder in this list with 2535 runs, Root has scored 2555 Test runs.
