On the third day of the 2024 Hyderabad Test, England cricketer Joe Root broke the record of the legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting to set up a new record for the most Test runs by a batter against India.


Former English Test captain Joe Root had a tough outing in the first match of the five-match Test series in the ongoing India tour. After scoring 29 runs in the first innings of the Hyderabad Test, Root scored only two runs in the crucial third innings of the Test match.

Most Test runs vs India: Joe Root broke Ricky Ponting’s record

However, during his very short stay at the crease in the third innings of the 2024 Hyderabad Test, Root surpassed legendary Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting in the list of most Test runs against India. While Ponting scored 2555 Test runs against India, Root has scored 2557 Test runs against India. Root has recorded nine centuries and ten half-centuries against India in his Test career.

Against India, Root has scored 1574 Test runs in 25 innings (15 matches) at home with an average of 74.95. The right-handed batter has hit seven Test centuries and five Test half-centuries against India at home.


Meanwhile, Root has scored 983 Test runs against the hosts India in 22 innings (11 matches) with an average of 46.80, including two centuries and five half-centuries.
