Over the last 10 years players from the prominent test playing nations such as India, Australia, England, New Zealand have worked on their skills to play in overseas conditions and their averages and the number of runs they have scored away from home. Let’s look at the top 5 batters who have the best averages in overseas conditions with a minimum of 20 innings under their belt.

1. Steve Smith – 


Steve Smith is the only batter to have an average of over 60 in overseas conditions. He is one of the best batters to have graced the test cricket format and all this while not having the usual technique to play the game and in his own unique way he has stood out from among his contemporaries and secured the number 1 rank batter for quite some time. Allan Border was one of the finest left handed batters of his generation and he was playing in the 1980s era where they were many like him and to stand out among them is very impressive. 3. Steve Waugh - 


One of the greatest cricketers of all time and someone who is as respected as anybody in the history of the game. He was an opening batter at that, facing the most difficult time for a batter in foreign conditions and still doing so well is a testament to his greatness as a player. He was a prodigy and he made full use of it.

 

5. Greg Chappell - 


A true great batter in the earlier times and a classical batter he was with a strong on side game and he loved scoring runs outside of Australia as he had a staggering average of 52.95 in overseas conditions during a time when there were no helmets and the pitches were not that good is quite something. He was a truly revered batter during his times and his combination with his brother Ian Chappell was legendary.
