England started the crucial five-match away Test series against the hosts India with a 28-run win at Hyderabad. Test Debutant left-arm spinner Tom Hartley was the hero for England in the fourth innings by picking up seven wickets and putting his name into the record book as one of the most successful English Test debutant spinners.


English captain Ben Stokes chose to bat first after winning the toss. While England were all out for 246 runs in the first innings, the hosts India replied with 436 runs as the home team had a 190-run lead.


The top-order batter Ollie Pope inspired the English team in their second innings with a knock of 196 runs as England scored 420 runs.

Chasing down the challenging 231 runs target in the fourth innings, India were bowled out for 202 runs, and England won by 28 runs.
