The WWE Universal Championship was established on July 25, 2016, following the WWE Draft, which saw the WWE Championship become exclusive to SmackDown. This necessitated the creation of a new world title for Raw. Finn Bálor became the inaugural Universal Champion by defeating Seth Rollins at SummerSlam on August 21, 2016.
