Rafael Nadal was born on 3rd June 1986 in Mallorca, Spain. He is nicknamed 'Rafa'. Rafael Nadal began his professional career at an age of 15 years and was only the ninth player in the world to win an ATP before turning 16. In 2003, Nadal won his first ATP title (a doubles event) in Croatia. Next year, he played his first ATP title for singles when he won the Prokon Open. In 2005, Nadal won 79 matches while Federer won 81 matches. This was the period where Nadal established dominance on clay courts. He eventually beat Federer in the final of the 2006 French Open, becoming the first-ever player to claim victory against the Swiss in a Grand Slam final. By the end of the year, Nadal had cemented his place as the second-best player in the world.

By 2015, his success began to falter, when he failed to win a single grand slam title. Nadal began 2017 with a loss against Federer, although he did reach the first Grand Slam final since 2014. He ended the season with two grand slam titles and the world number one crown. With this feat, Nadal was the first player above 30 to finish the season as the top-ranked player.
