Opener - Alastair Cook (11845)

Former English captain Alastair Cook is the leading run-scorer in the openers list. He scored 11845 while opening in 278 innings. He is England's leading run-scorer and has smashed 33 centuries in Test Cricket.


No. 3 - Kumar Sangakkara (11679)

It doesn't come as a surprise that Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara has scored the most runs while batting number 3. He has scored 11679 runs in 207 innings. Sangakkara has a total of 38 centuries to his name, 37 of them coming when he batted 1 down.


No. 4- Sachin Tendulkar (13492)

The greatest of the game needs no introduction. Sachin Tendulkar has scored 15921 runs in test cricket. Out of which 13492 came when he batted 4th. He has 44 centuries to his name while batting in this position.


No 5 - Shivnarine Chanderpaul (6883)

West Indies’ middle-order legend Chanderpaul has scored around 12000 runs in his test cricket. However, the majority of his contribution came when he batted 5th.

He has scored 6883 in 151 innings when he batted at 5th position. He is just 100 runs ahead of Steve Waugh to be the leading run-scorer in no. 5 position.


No. 6 - Steve Waugh (3165)

Australian legend Steve Waugh missed out on being the leading run-scorer for the No.5 position, which by the way is his desired batting order.

However, he contributed 3165 runs in 79 innings while batting at the 6th position. This total helps him top the chart for the no. 6 position.

 

No.7 - Adam Gilchrist (3948)

Adam Gilchrist scored 3948 runs in 100 innings. He even hit 12 centuries while batting 5 down.

It used to be a fascinating thing for the viewers as Gilchrist was one of the few batsmen of that time who used to open in ODI's and bat at 5 down in Test matches.


No. 8 - Daniel Vettori (2227)

New Zealand legend Daniel Vettori tops the chart for no.8 position. He has scored 2227 runs in 67 innings. Further, Vettori has 6 centuries to his name and 4 while batting at no. 8 position.


No.9 - Stuart Broad (1310)

England's pace star Stuart Broad is the leading run-scorer when batting at number 9 position. Despite being a tailender Broad has managed to score 1310 runs in 70 innings.  He also has a century to his name when he scored a record-breaking 169 against Pakistan in 2010.

 

No.10 - Stuart Broad (745)

Stuart Broad is the only batsman to be the leading run-scorer in two different positions. He has scored 745 runs while batting at the number 10 position.

 

Number 11- Muttiah Muralitharan (623)

The leading wicket-taker in the world has another record to his name. Murali is the leading run-scorer while batting last in test cricket.

Muralitharan has scored 623 runs in 98 innings he has played.
