Sri Lanka created history with a stunning chase of a 430-run target in an important ODI match against England in the ODI tri-series at Rawalpindi, as they recorded the second-highest successful ODI chase in history.
After Sri Lanka chose to field first, England slammed 429/4 in 50 overs, their fourth-highest ODI total, largely thanks to the fastest ODI double-century by the English captain Harry Brook, who scored 202 off 116 balls with 21 fours and 10 sixes. Also, the opener Tom Banton (50 off 51 balls) and Joe Root (69 off 66 balls) had some top performances before Will Jacks’ fiery finish of 66 not out off 30 balls with eight fours and three sixes.
In reply, Sri Lanka lost their first two wickets for just 24 runs, but the magic started to happen after that. Opener Avishka Fernando scored 97 off 83 balls (11 fours and two sixes), while Pavan Rathnayake slammed 130 off 106 balls with 15 fours and three sixes. Later, Dasun Shanaka and Janith Liyanage played fiery knocks to chase the giant ODI target on the penultimate delivery of the fixture. Shanak slammed 97 off just 50 balls with six fours and eight sixes, while Janith finished the game successfully with 61 not out off just 27 balls with the help of seven fours and three sixes.
Only third time ODI saw 400+ chase
It was the only third time in ODI history when a 400+ total was successfully chased. After South Africa’s historic chase of 435 runs against Australia at Johannesburg in 2006, India chased a 406-run target inside 44 overs against the West Indies at Gwalior on 30 September 2026.
Joint record number of 50+ scores in the match
Also, the Sri Lanka vs England Rawalpindi ODI experienced 50+ scores from eight batters, including one double century and one century. It is the joint record for the most 50+ scores in an ODI match, as it has happened three more times.
Most aggregated runs by the batters in ODI history
Although the Sri Lanka vs England match experienced the second-most aggregated runs in ODI history (859 runs), sitting just after the famous South Africa vs Australia 2006 Johannesburg ODI (872 runs), the Sri Lanka vs England match created history with the most aggregated runs scored by the batters in ODI history (simply removing extras) with 841 runs, as the 2006 South Africa vs Australia Johannesburg ODI is in the next place with 833 runs.
