Virender Sehwag as Chief Selector and why it can be the best thing for Indian Cricket

The BCCI has been searching for the 5th selector and a new chief selector and just a few days ago the BCCI has invited applications for the post of the vacant Selector and most likely it will be from the north zone because Chetan Sharma was from the North zone. And this time BCCI needs a strong name that the fans will look at and they will get confidence.

And there is no one else more better suited than Virender Sehwag as he is the big cricketer who could become the chief selector and if that happens then Indian cricket will be in a much better place and this will be a difficult thing to do.

Let’s talk about how this can be the best thing for Indian Cricket.

Virender Sehwag will change the way the team is selected

Virender Sehwag is not any other Player who had just played 5 odd Test Matches and he will not bow down to the whims and demands of the coach and the captain all the time. Virender Sehwag has played over 100 Test Matches and with that he brings a level of pedigree and integrity and he will be able to argue and stamp his authority and he will be able to give the best players to the team and not the players that the team management wants to play.

The deserving players like Sarfaraz Khan, Abhimanyu Easwaran and the ones are the players who are not able to get any opportunities to play for India and if he comes in as Chief Selector then these players who do well in the Ranji trophy will also be selected for Team India. And the policy of taking breaks after every series should also be stopped and Virender Sehwag will stop this practice and tell the players that they will have to play for India. Rahul Dravid is a player who has played over 160 Test Matches and Rohit Sharma has played 50 Test Matches and over 400 white ball Matches so someone with equal experience is needed.

However it will not be easy for the BCCI to rope in someone like Virender Sehwag because the current salary of 1 crore is not enough for him to apply for this post because the amount of dedication and hard work it takes to be a chief selector for the Indian team is big. Virender Sehwag has a lucrative contract as a commentator with the broadcaster and he gets 7 crores for his work there so to entice him the BCCI will drastically have to increase the salary to around 6 crores so that Virender Sehwag can think about this job because Rahul Dravid as the head coach gets 10 Crores per year and VVS Laxman gets 8 crores per year to be the Head of NCA. If this time as well the selector selected is someone with not that level of pedigree then Indian cricket will not be able to go to new heights.
