Why are India not able to win an ICC tournament?

This is a very painful article to write as it has been 9 years since India has won an ICC tournament with the last being the 2013 Champions Trophy in 2013 under the leadership of MS Dhoni and after that it has been 9 years that India has not won an ICC tournament and there must be some reasons that it has kept on happening and in this article I will try to list my reasons as to why it has happened.

It has been a frustrating wait for an ICC trophy for far too long and the wait feels more upsetting because India is the biggest cricket nation in the world and it has the richest board in the world as well. India also has the best players in the world so the fans are right in asking the question as to why India fails in ICC events? Let’s look at the reasons.

Defensive mindset

The Indian team has had a big problem that it has been of a defensive mindset and that the team is not in attacking mode all the time. In the last World Cup in Dubai, this defensive mindset resulted in India getting knocked out in the Super 12 stage and after that they worked on that for a full year but in the current World Cup again the same defensive mindset was visible as India scored at 5 runs per over in the powerplay which was the lowest.

Bad team selections

This has been a big problem In Indian cricket over the past 5-6 years in major ICC events starting with the 2019 Cricket World Cup where Ambati Rayadu was dropped suddenly and Vijay Shankar was picked out of nowhere. Then last year Yuzvendra Chahal was not even in the 15 which was a blunder and then players such as Varun Chakrabarty were selected on the basis of just one IPL. Then this year Deepak Chahar was ignored and Yuzvendra Chahal was not even played in the 11 in a single match when all the other teams had one right arm leg spinner.

Top order failures

The top order of the Indian batting has been one of the Major reasons why India has not been able to win the big one. The pair of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul has been a disaster where neither man was in form and they scored so few runs while consuming so many balls and that added so much pressure to the whole batting unit. It is high time to bring fresh faces who are fearless.

Lackluster bowling

The biggest reason why India are not in the World Cup final this year is their bowling, before the start of the World Cup Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja were ruled out of the World Cup and that was a huge blow then the right Bowling attack was not selected as they left out Deepak Chahar and in the 11 they left out Yuzvendra Chahal. And in the most important matches the bowling leaves a lot to be desired.
