Is Cole Palmer a Better Pick Than Bruno Fernandes - FPL 2026-27
Cole Palmer and Bruno Fernandes had contrasting starts to the 2026/27 Premier League season, immediately raising an important FPL question. Palmer looked back to his absolute best against Fulham, playing a huge role in Chelsea's 3-2 away victory, while Manchester United were shockingly poor in their 2-0 defeat to Hull City. Fernandes, coming off a record-breaking Premier League season in which he broke the assist record, endured a forgettable Gameweek 1 with virtually no impact.

So, with Palmer available for £9.5m and Fernandes priced at an astronomical £12m, is the Manchester United captain already looking like a disaster FPL pick?

Fernandes Struggles While Palmer Shines

Manchester United were absolutely lifeless in attack against Hull City, and Fernandes, as the heartbeat of their attacking play, was unable to change the game.

The Portuguese midfielder not only failed to contribute a goal or assist, but it did not even look like he was able to influence proceedings consistently. For an FPL asset costing £12m, that is obviously concerning.

Palmer, meanwhile, was absolutely everywhere during Chelsea's victory over Fulham. He constantly involved himself in attacking moves, linked up brilliantly with Pedro and Rogers and looked like an absolute nightmare for Fulham's defenders.

It was exactly the kind of performance FPL managers wanted to see from Chelsea's superstar after his injury-hit previous campaign.

The £2.5m Difference Changes Everything

The biggest difference between Fernandes and Palmer in FPL this season is their price.

Fernandes costs £12m, while Palmer is available for just £9.5m — £2.5m cheaper.

At their very best, there is little argument that both players operate at an extremely similar level. Depending on form, tactics and fitness, one may be slightly better than the other, but both are elite Premier League attacking midfielders.

They also share another major FPL advantage: both take corners and penalties for their respective teams.

Fernandes' best season at Manchester United last year produced 30 goal contributions, while Palmer's best fully fit campaign at Chelsea saw him contribute 23 goals. Seven goals is a significant difference, particularly in FPL, but this is where context becomes extremely important.

Fernandes Has One Major Advantage

The biggest advantage Fernandes has over Palmer is availability.

Bruno has built a reputation for being remarkably durable and rarely missing matches through injury. Palmer, on the other hand, missed a significant portion of last season, meaning there is still an element of doubt surrounding his fitness.

That makes Fernandes the safer option.

However, FPL is not simply about choosing the player who is least likely to get injured. It is about balancing expected output with price, and that is where Palmer becomes extremely interesting.

If both players remain fit throughout the season, the argument could change dramatically.

Why Palmer Could Be the Better Long-Term Pick

Chelsea arguably possess a significantly better squad than Manchester United, particularly in attack.

Palmer has already shown brilliant chemistry with Pedro and Rogers, while Xabi Alonso appears to have the tactical quality required to get the best out of his attacking players.

If Chelsea continue playing fluid, aggressive football, Palmer could potentially surpass his previous record-breaking numbers this season, provided he stays fit.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have had an underwhelming transfer window in comparison, and their football against Hull highlighted a major concern. Their attacking style currently looks nowhere near as fluid or threatening as Chelsea's.

That does not suddenly make Fernandes a bad player. Rather, it makes his £12m price tag considerably harder to justify when Palmer offers a potentially similar level of output for £2.5m less.

FPL Verdict: Don't Rush the Bruno-to-Palmer Move

The most important thing to remember is that FPL is a long game. One gameweek should not be enough to make a rash transfer, especially when fitness is the biggest question surrounding Palmer.

If you are specifically considering bringing Palmer in as a Bruno Fernandes replacement, our recommendation is to monitor Palmer's fitness for at least another one or two gameweeks and keep Fernandes for now, particularly with Manchester United facing Ipswich in gameweek 2.

If Palmer proves to be consistently fit and the attacking numbers produced by both players remain in a similar range, or even if Fernandes is slightly ahead, Palmer could still stand out as the better long-term FPL pick.

Why? The £2.5m saving is enormous.

That extra money can be reinvested elsewhere in your squad, potentially upgrading a defender, midfielder or forward. And if Palmer can maintain his fitness while playing in a stronger and more fluid Chelsea attack, the £9.5m price could eventually look like one of the best premium-value options in FPL.

For now, keep Fernandes. But Palmer is very much one to watch.
