Man Utd set an unwanted Premier League record after suffering a shock 2-0 defeat to Hull City

Manchester United suffered a shock 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their opening Premier League fixture of the 2026/27 season. Michael Carrick’s side endured a nightmare afternoon at the MKM Stadium, with Hull taking control through first-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy. United struggled to create a meaningful response after the break, despite changes designed to spark a comeback.

The result not only gave Hull a dream start to their Premier League return but also saw Manchester United make unwanted history.

Man Utd Lose to Newly Promoted Side for First Time

Manchester United have now suffered an embarrassing Premier League record after their defeat to Hull City.

The Red Devils have lost on the opening day of a league season to a newly promoted side for the first time in their history, having won 10 of the first 13 instances while drawing the other three.

That means United had previously gone unbeaten in all 13 of their opening-day league meetings against newly promoted opposition, making Hull’s victory a historic achievement.

The defeat is particularly damaging given the optimism surrounding United heading into the new campaign. Carrick had been handed the permanent managerial role after a strong end to the previous season, while the club had strengthened its midfield with the additions of players such as Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos.

However, United looked far from convincing against Hull. The hosts punished defensive mistakes from set pieces, with both goals coming in the first half. United were unable to find a way back into the game, even after Marcus Rashford was introduced after the interval.

For Hull, meanwhile, the victory was a perfect way to mark their return to the Premier League after a nine-year absence. Their defensive organisation and intensity frustrated United throughout the contest, securing a memorable three points.

What Next for Man Utd and Hull City?

Hull City will now look to build on their hugely positive start when they face Coventry City in their next Premier League fixture.

Manchester United, meanwhile, will have an opportunity to respond quickly when Ipswich Town visit Old Trafford for their first home Premier League game of the season. With both opponents newly promoted, United will be desperate to avoid another setback and get their campaign back on track.
