Manchester United had a thrilling turnaround in the second half of last season when Michael Carrick took charge on an interim basis for the second time at the club in January this year following a forgetful tenure under Ruben Amorim. The club legend changed the club’s fortunes dramatically as they went from struggling to get into the top six to finishing not only third on the table but also giving real problems to title contenders Manchester City and eventual champions Arsenal. It secured them Champions League football for the first time after two seasons. The Red Devils lost just twice under the star midfielder and collected 12 wins in 17 league games he oversaw. Such an excellent return rewarded Carrick with a permanent role for the new season, with the Red Devils hoping that they return to their absolute best under him. Having made some effective signings of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos, with the squad more motivated than ever to deliver, United are aiming to be more than just a top four contender this time.
That being said, the 2026-27 season will be far more challenging for Manchester United, as the so-called ‘Big Six’ have all massively strengthened in the summer, and almost all have new faces in the dugout leading the charge. The new season for Carrick’s men will kick-start in the opening weekend when they travel to MKM Stadium to face promoted side Hull City on 22 August 2026. Their first home game of the season also came against another team that went up from the second division, Ipswich Town, a week later. The first Manchester derby of the season in just their fourth game serves as an early major test for the side, hosted at Old Trafford, while the first North-West derby of the season against Liverpool at Anfield is at the end of November. United will have a tricky end to the season as they have to travel to London to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the penultimate game before finishing at home to Fulham in the final day on 30 May 2027.
