Manchester City have completed a record-breaking deadline-day transfer for Enzo Fernandez, signing the Argentine midfielder from Chelsea for a British-record £125 million. The move also reunites Fernandez with his former Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca, who could now have a major role in determining how the midfielder is used at the Etihad.
For FPL managers, this is a transfer that deserves serious attention. Fernandez is arriving at one of the Premier League's most prolific attacking sides, with Erling Haaland leading the line and players such as Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo around him.
At just £6.9m, could Fernandez become the ultimate FPL differential?
Enzo Fernandez Is Already an Intriguing FPL Option
Fernandez is currently priced at £6.9m in FPL and is owned by just 3.5% of managers.
That makes him an extremely low-owned option with significant upside.
In fact, it would not be the biggest surprise if Fernandez's £6.9m price eventually climbed towards £7.3m or £7.4m over the next few months. The potential for him to become an excellent FPL asset under Maresca at Manchester City is enormous.
There are several reasons why.
Maresca Already Got the Best Out of Fernandez
The first reason is simple: Fernandez played his best club football under Enzo Maresca at Chelsea.
In the 2024/25 season, Fernandez finished with six goals and seven assists, establishing himself as one of Chelsea's better performers.
Then came 2025/26, when he took his game to another level. Fernandez scored 10 goals and provided four assists, giving him a total of 14 goal contributions.
The pattern is clear. Under Maresca, Fernandez improved his attacking output from one season to the next.
Now they are reunited at Manchester City.
That relationship could be hugely important for his FPL potential.
Could Fernandez Become City's No.10?
This is where things become particularly interesting.
Manchester City have paid a British-record £125m for Fernandez. While he is capable of playing as a No.6 or No.8 and contributing defensively, it would be surprising if such an expensive signing with great attacking potential was ultimately used predominantly in a defensive role.
Our prediction is that, once the new signings settle and Maresca determines his best XI, City's midfield could feature Ayyoub Bouaddi and Elliot Anderson operating as the interchanging deeper six and eight, with Fernandez pushed further forward as the No.10.
If that happens, Fernandez's FPL appeal changes completely.
Playing directly behind Haaland would give him enormous attacking responsibility and the freedom to make the most of his creativity.
Haaland Could Make Fernandez an Assist Machine
There may not be a better situation for an attacking midfielder looking to accumulate assists than having Erling Haaland in front of him.
If Fernandez becomes City's No.10, he will have Haaland as the primary target for his final passes. The Norwegian is arguably the most prolific finisher in the Premier League, meaning Fernandez could have a huge opportunity to rack up assists.
And he will not be relying exclusively on Haaland.
Foden, Doku, Cherki and Semenyo give City an extraordinary collection of attacking talent. Fernandez would therefore be surrounded by players capable of turning his creativity into FPL points.
Even if Maresca ultimately uses him as an attacking No.8 rather than a No.10, the potential remains. With Haaland ahead of him, Fernandez could still produce plenty of assists while adding goals himself.
What seems least likely is a long-term role as a defensive No.6, particularly with Bouaddi and Anderson available.
Should You Buy Enzo Fernandez Now?
There is still some uncertainty.
We do not yet know exactly how quickly Maresca will integrate Fernandez into the starting XI or precisely where he will play. Waiting a few weeks would give FPL managers more information.
However, waiting also carries a major risk.
If Fernandez immediately establishes himself as a regular starter in an attacking role, his ownership could rise rapidly and his price could follow.
At £6.9m and 3.5% ownership, there is already an opportunity to get ahead of the crowd.
The British-record fee is also significant. You simply do not spend £125m on a player without expecting him to become a major part of the team. Maresca desperately wanted Fernandez, and that strongly suggests he has an important role planned for him.
Verdict: A High-Risk, High-Reward FPL Differential
Fernandez is not yet a completely safe FPL pick. We need to see how Maresca uses him and whether he immediately becomes a regular starter.
But our prediction is that he will ultimately play either as an attacking No.8 or a No.10 behind Haaland.
Either role could be extremely valuable from an FPL perspective.
At £6.9m, with only 3.5% ownership and the possibility of playing in an attacking Manchester City side alongside Haaland, Fernandez has all the ingredients of a brilliant differential.
You can wait and play the long-term game if needed, but if you are an FPL manager who loves taking an early gamble in search of a huge reward, Enzo Fernandez could be one of the most exciting £6.9m options in the game right now.
The uncertainty is real. So is the upside.
