Nicolas Jackson has completed his move from Chelsea to Aston Villa in a club-record deal worth £47.5 million, potentially rising to £65 million with add-ons, signing a five-year contract. More importantly for the new season, Jackson reunites with Unai Emery, the manager who previously worked with him at Villarreal.
For Fantasy Premier League managers, though, the biggest headline is his £6.5m FPL price tag. With Ollie Watkins departing for Al-Hilal, Jackson has a genuine opportunity to become Villa's first-choice striker and potentially one of the biggest value picks in FPL.
Nicolas Jackson's Chelsea Spell Was Full of Highs and Lows
Jackson's Chelsea career was a strange mixture of encouraging moments and enormous frustration.
There were certainly flashes of brilliance. His movement was often excellent; he consistently found himself in dangerous positions, and his link-up play could be impressive, particularly alongside Cole Palmer. The problem was that Jackson was never consistent enough to turn those flashes into sustained elite production.
The biggest frustration was, quite simply, his finishing.
Jackson repeatedly got himself into excellent goal scoring positions but failed to convert chances that a Premier League striker should be expected to finish. There were countless occasions when better finishing could have added another five to 10 goals to his seasonal tally. That is how significant the issue was.
His second major problem was discipline. Jackson developed an unfortunate habit of picking up unnecessary cards, with suspensions becoming a recurring issue. He accumulated 18 yellow cards and two red cards across his first two seasons at Chelsea, while his 2024/25 campaign alone included eight yellows and two dismissals.
Those two weaknesses, poor finishing and ill-discipline, ultimately became defining criticisms of his Chelsea spell. After being loaned to Bayern Munich last season, Jackson has now left Stamford Bridge permanently.
Why Unai Emery Could Transform Jackson
This is where things become extremely interesting.
Jackson already knows Emery. The pair worked together at Villarreal, with Emery giving the forward his first-team debut and helping develop his technical and tactical understanding. Jackson himself has previously credited Emery with teaching him extensively during their time together.
And Emery has developed a reputation for getting the best out of players who need confidence, structure or tactical refinement.
The obvious example is Marcus Rashford. When Rashford arrived at Villa, he was struggling badly for consistency and confidence at Manchester United. Under Emery, he rediscovered his swagger, produced some excellent performances and subsequently earned a loan move to Barcelona.
That makes Jackson particularly fascinating.
If Emery can work on his finishing, improve his decision-making and eliminate the disciplinary problems that have repeatedly held him back, we could see a completely different player.
The Numbers Make Jackson Very Interesting
Ultimately, the Premier League is a numbers game.
And Jackson's numbers at Chelsea are actually much better than the perception surrounding him.
In his first Premier League season, he scored 14 goals and provided five assists. In his second, he recorded 10 goals and five assists. That means Jackson produced 19 and 15 goal contributions, respectively, despite being widely regarded as underwhelming at Chelsea.
That's the key point for FPL managers.
Jackson wasn't even playing at his best, yet he still delivered between 15 and 20 goal contributions across both Premier League campaigns.
Now put him into a different situation.
He is expected to be Aston Villa's main striker following Watkins' departure. Watkins leaves after becoming Villa's all-time leading Premier League scorer, with 91 league goals, so replacing his output is an enormous challenge.
Jackson might even reproduce Watkins' peak numbers if Emery can restore his confidence and improve his finishing. In such a scenario, 15-20 goal contributions looks like a very realistic target.
And if everything clicks?
20+ goal contributions is absolutely possible.
Is Nicolas Jackson a £6.5m FPL bargain?
This is where the risk-reward equation becomes extremely appealing.
At £6.5m, Jackson is certainly not a safe FPL pick. There are obvious concerns: his finishing, discipline, consistency and the fact that Aston Villa themselves are undergoing significant squad changes.
But FPL isn't always about finding the safest player. Sometimes it's about identifying the player with the biggest potential upside before everyone else does.
Jackson has already demonstrated that he can produce 15-20 goal contributions in the Premier League without being anywhere close to his best. Now he has a manager who knows him, a guaranteed opportunity to lead the line and the responsibility of replacing a prolific striker.
At £6.5m, Nicolas Jackson is a huge-risk, huge-reward FPL option.
If Emery works his magic again, Jackson could go from being one of Chelsea's most frustrating forwards to one of the best-value strikers in FPL.
