Croatia FIFA World Cup 2026 Preview

The golden generation led by Luka Modrić may be approaching its final chapter, but Croatia arrives in the FIFA World Cup 2026 in North America with the ambitions of making a deep run into the tournament once again. Still under the management of star coach Zlatko Dalic, the Vatreni would like to make another stunning showing at the global stage after booking their ticket to the 2026 World Cup with ease and gifting the nation’s greatest ever footballer one big moment. However, it will be a challenge for the team who are in a period of transition to maintain their extraordinary levels of the past decade as they face Ghana, Panama and familiar foes England in Group L.

Croatia FIFA World Cup History

Croatia will embark on their seventh World Cup journey in 2026 since gaining independence in the early 1990s, having missed the finals just once. They have built one of the most impressive records of any modern footballing nation on the world stage. The Chequered Ones announced themselves on the global stage at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. Led by Davor Šuker, they reached the semi-finals in their debut appearance and eventually secured third place, stunning the footballing world with their fearless performances. Although subsequent tournaments brought mixed results, Croatia returned to prominence under a golden generation spearheaded by Luka Modrić. At the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, the Vatreni embarked on a historic run to the final, defeating Argentina, Denmark, Russia and England before eventually losing to France. Four years later in Qatar, Croatia once again exceeded expectations by reaching the semi-finals and defeating Morocco in the third-place playoff, making them a force to reckon with at each tournament.

Croatia Qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026

Croatia did not crumble from expectations of topping their qualifying group, containing the Czech Republic, Faroe Islands, Montenegro and Gibraltar. The Chequered Ones finished first, six points clear of the Czechs, collecting seven wins and a draw in eight available games. Their defensive might was on full display as they collected five clean sheets and conceded just four, with two of them coming in the 3-2 away win against Montenegro when they had already wrapped up qualification. However, their attack should not be underestimated either, with 26 goals scored, even better than Spain and only three teams have more. Remarkably, it was their evergreen legend, Ivan Perisic, who contributed to the most goals in the qualifiers with eight and will play their final World Cup alongside the nation’s all-time great Luka Modric. Here’s Croatia FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualification Results and Stats

Strengths of Croatia Football Team

Croatia's greatest strength remains their midfield quality. Even as Luka Modrić approaches the twilight of his remarkable career, Croatia continue to possess technically gifted midfielders capable of controlling matches. Established names such as Mateo Kovačić and Mario Pasalic, mixed with future stars like Petar Sucic and Martin Baturina, ensure the nation remains exceptionally strong in the centre of the pitch. The team also possesses extensive tournament experience. Many members of the squad have participated in deep runs at multiple finals and understand the demands of knockout football. Defensively, Vatreni remains solid with a player like Joško Gvardiol, who has developed into one of the world's premier defenders.  His leadership, composure and versatility provide Croatia with a solid foundation. They also have excellent wing-back or full-back options like Bayern Munich’s versatile and tactically flexible right-back, Josip Stanisic. Above all, Croatia possesses a winning mentality. Time and again, they have demonstrated an ability to remain calm under pressure and find solutions in difficult situations.

Weaknesses of Croatia Football Team

The biggest concern surrounding Croatia is the ageing profile of some key players. While Luka Modrić and Ivan Perišić remain influential figures, both are nearing the end of extraordinary careers. Replacing players of that calibre is never easy, and there will inevitably be questions regarding whether the next generation can match their impact. The team is also unable to shake off their long-standing goal-scoring inconsistency and search for a prolific number nine after Mario Mandzukic. Even though they have found scoring charm in their qualifiers, Croatia have to rely on the 34-year-olds Andrej Kramaric and Ante Budimir or an untested Petar Musa to find the back of the net, unlike some of the tournament favourites who have prime forwards at their disposal. The squad also lacks the quality depth, apart from probably midfield, available to nations such as France, Spain, England or Argentina. Injuries to key players could significantly affect Croatia's chances.

Key Player: Luka Modrić

Even at the age of 40, Luka Modrić remains the soul of Croatian football. Widely regarded as the greatest player in the nation's history, Modrić has spent nearly two decades orchestrating Croatia's rise from talented outsiders to perennial contenders. His achievements include a Ballon d'Or, multiple UEFA Champions League titles and some of the most memorable performances in World Cup history. While younger players now shoulder more responsibility, Modrić continues to influence matches through his intelligence, vision and technical brilliance. Few players in football history have maintained such a high level for so long. The 2026 World Cup could represent the final chapter of an extraordinary international career. For Croatian supporters, the dream is that their captain can inspire one last memorable tournament run before bringing the curtain down on one of the greatest careers the game has ever seen.

Manager: Zlatko Dalić

Few international managers have enjoyed as much success in recent years as Zlatko Dalić. Since taking charge in 2017, Dalić has overseen the greatest period in Croatian football history. Under his leadership, Croatia reached the 2018 World Cup final, finished third at the 2022 World Cup and consistently competed at the highest level in international football. Dalić's greatest strength lies in his ability to maximise the collective potential of his squad. Croatia may not always possess the depth of larger nations, but they are invariably organised, disciplined and mentally resilient. The 2026 World Cup presents a new challenge. With several veterans approaching the latter stages of their careers, Dalić must oversee a smooth transition while maintaining the standards that have defined his tenure and might finally get over the line this time to add a silverware, that too the biggest trophy in world football, as a mark of his incredible work with the side.

Croatia FIFA World Cup 2026 Prediction

Writing off Croatia before a major tournament has become one of football's most common mistakes. The Vatreni may no longer possess the same star power that carried them to the 2018 final, but they remain exceptionally well-coached, tactically disciplined and mentally resilient. Those qualities alone make them dangerous opponents. Much will depend on whether the next generation can support veterans such as Modrić, Kovačić and Perišić. If the new stars blend well with the experienced heads, Croatia could once again outperform expectations. They will face one of the tournament favourites, England, whom they beat in the semifinals to reach the 2018 edition, in the group and while the repeat of that result might not happen this time, Zlatko Dalic’s side will not be unhappy to take a point in the tournament opener. The group winners will then be decided by how many goals are scored against Ghana, but likely Panama. If Croatia finishes first, they will play a third-placed team from any of Groups E, H, I, J or K, but will have to face the winners of Group F, likely the Netherlands, if they end in second. If the Vatreni make it to the Round of 16, they are going to face the prime contenders for the title, Portugal or Spain, depending on their group standings, which might be too much for this particular team to manage, walking towards the end of their golden generation.
