Head Coach Didier Deschamps has announced a squad with returning stars for France’s fixtures in September. The 2022 World Cup finalists will compete in a Euro qualifier against Ireland at home before traveling to Dortmund to play a friendly game with tournament hosts Germany. Les Bleus are placed at the top of the table in qualifiers by winning all of the four games so far. They are six points clear at the top from second-placed Greece while playing a game more.

France 1-0 Greece

France’s brilliant start to the Euro qualifiers carried on to the games in June. After comfortably beating Gibraltar by 3-0, Deschamps’s players had to work a bit harder to get past Greece with Kylian Mbappé’s 55th-minute penalty giving them a narrow 1-0 victory. The PSG star has scored four goals so far and is trailing top-scorer Rasmus Hojlund of Denmark by two goals.

France Squad

Goalkeepers: Alphonso Areola (West Ham), Mike Maignan (AC Milan), Brice Samba (Lens)

Defenders: Axel Disasi (Chelsea), Lucas Hernandez (Paris Saint-Germain), Theo Hernandez (AC Milan), Ibrahima Konaté (Liverpool), Jules Koundé (FC Barcelona), Benjamin Pavard (Inter Milan), William Saliba (Arsenal), Dayot Upamecano (Bayern Munich)

Head Coach: Didier Deschamps

2018 World Cup-winning midfielders N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba have been left out despite playing regularly for their team. Kante made the move to Al Ittihad in the Saudi League this summer from Chelsea while Pogba is receiving game minutes at Juventus. Deschamps confirmed that Kante is still available for selection but has chosen the option of bringing young players who respond well to the expectations of the very highest level. Defender Lucas Hernandez made his return to the national team after a lengthy absence due to a cruciate ligament rupture in the World Cup last year. He has played three league games for PSG this season. Arsenal’s William Saliba is also back in the fold following his injury issues towards the end of last season. Despite sustaining a minor muscle injury, Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté has been selected for the squad.

Germany vs France - Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund (00:15)

With the first half of the qualifying campaign finished, France will hope to keep their fine momentum going against Ireland on Friday, 8th September 2023. The last time these two met back in March in Dublin, the game was decided by a 50th-minute screamer from Benjamin Pavard which also required a spectacular save at the end by Mike Maignan. Another win will get them closer to sealing a place in the Euro 2024 Germany. Les Bleus will face the hosts in a friendly match five days later, having not lost the fixture in the last six attempts.
