Homam Ahmed and Assim Madibo Red Cards vs Canada

The hosts Canada faced Qatar in the second round of the Group B match, where Canada had a historic day by recording their first-ever World Cup win, it was recorded with a 6-0 scoreline in favour of the Reds.

Cyle Larin (16’) scored the opening goal for Canada, while the star Jonathan David (29’, 45’+3’, 90’+2’) recorded a hat-trick. Also, Nathan Saliba (64’) scored one goal in the second half, before the Qatari midfielder Mohamed Manai had an own goal.

Apart from Canada’s six goals, the match was also highlighted by two crucial red cards for Qatar, which made a huge impact on the game result.

33’: Homam Ahmed (Qatar) – Direct Red Card for DOGSO Offence

  • In the 33rd minute, Homam Ahmed brought down Tajon Buchanan. Initially, the Qatar defender was shown a yellow card, with a penalty awarded to Canada. However, the VAR later confirmed that it was a free-kick, and Homam got a direct red card instead of the yellow card for the DOGSO (Denying an Obvious Goal-Scoring Opportunity) offence.

What is next for Homam Ahmed?

Homam Ahmed will miss Qatar’s next game of the group stage, as they will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in their last Group B game of the tournament.

53’: Assim Madibo (Qatar) – Direct Red Card for Violent Contact

  • It was a reckless challenge from Assim Madibo to Ismaël Koné, and it resulted in a brutal leg injury for Koné, who was forced to be substituted out. Although the referee first showed a yellow card to Assim, he changed the decision to a direct red card after the VAR intervention.

Will Assim Madibo be punished more strictly?

According to the present status, Assim Madibo will be suspended for one game, as his challenge was reckless but most importantly non-intentional. So, he will definitely miss Qatar’s last Group B game of the tournament, against Bosnia and Herzegovina. If FIFA's disciplinary committee reviews the tackle differently with the feel of more brutality, the punishment can be stricter for the Qatar midfielder.
