It was probably a dream come true for James Trafford when Manchester City re-signed him on July 29, 2025, for £27 million from Burnley, until later that same transfer window the Citizens ended up signing Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG for around £26 million. Although the signing of Donnarumma made sense for Pep Guardiola and City both from a sporting and commercial perspective, the move was undoubtedly a betrayal by them on Trafford when you look at it from his perspective.
Let us now look at Trafford's history with Manchester City, his comeback to the club, and the impact on his City career after Gianluigi Donnarumma joined from PSG.
James Trafford: Manchester City's very own Goalkeeper
James Trafford began his football journey with Cockermouth and Carlisle United before joining Manchester City in August 2015 at the age of 12. Initially a midfielder at Carlisle, he switched to playing as a goalkeeper at nine. During his time in Manchester City’s academy, he was part of the Under-18 team that won the 2019–20 Professional U18 Development League and the Under-23 side that secured the 2020–21 Professional U23 Development League. In July 2021, Trafford went on loan to Accrington Stanley, though the spell proved challenging due to injuries and losing his place in the first team.
Promising Stints at Bolton Wanderers and Burnley
James Trafford joined Bolton Wanderers on loan in January 2022 and immediately impressed, keeping clean sheets in his first four matches — a first in the club’s history. He returned to Bolton for the 2022–23 season and enjoyed a remarkable campaign, breaking several club records including the most consecutive home clean sheets and the most clean sheets in a single season (25), finishing with 26 overall. Trafford also kept a clean sheet in Bolton’s 4–0 win over Plymouth Argyle in the 2023 EFL Trophy final and helped the team reach the League One play-offs. His outstanding performances earned him Bolton’s Young Player of the Year award and a place in the League One PFA Team of the Year.
In July 2023, Trafford moved permanently to Burnley from Manchester City for an initial £15 million fee, potentially rising to £19 million. He made his Premier League debut against Manchester City and later delivered a standout performance against Brighton, making 10 saves in a 1–1 draw. Trafford continued to excel in the 2024–25 Championship season, saving two penalties against Sunderland and going on an incredible run of 1,000 minutes without conceding. He broke the Championship record with 12 consecutive clean sheets and finished the season with 29 clean sheets, equalling the English football record. Burnley also set a historic defensive record by conceding just 16 goals in 46 matches.
A dream return to Manchester City that has now become a nightmare
When Manchester City re-signed James Trafford in 2025, many fans saw it as the ultimate comeback story. The story was such that their very own Goalkeeper has finally come back to his home club for some unfinished business after leaving them and then proving himself to be a top goalkeeper. Trafford was initially City's starting keeper after his transfer, with Pep Guardiola handing him his debut in their first Premier League game of the season, which ended in a 4-0 win for them against Wolves.
Fast forward to the present in March 2026, Trafford has only made a shockingly low 3 Premier League appearances till now, with the last league appearance coming all the way back on 31st August, 2025 against Brighton away. What was supposed to be a dream return to the club where it all began for him has now turned into a nightmare which he simply can't escape. To make matters worse, Trafford had also rejected Newcastle to join City in the transfer, where he could've become their number 1 goalkeeper and played frequently in the Premier League and Champions League.
Gianluigi Donnarumma, the main reason why Trafford's City homecoming has become a disaster, is widely considered to be the best Goalkeeper in the world by many fans and pundits. Thus, Trafford never had any chance of replacing him as City's main keeper after he was signed. The Italian has been Impressive since joining them as well, and is expected to be their no. 1 Goalkeeper for the years to come.
As for James Trafford, if we were in his place, we would be having emergency meetings with his agents to seal an exit from Manchester City as soon as possible after this season ends. His move to the City is the ultimate proof that sometimes you have to forever move on in life and never go back to old familiar places.
