Julián Álvarez’s dream move to Barcelona is now firmly off the table, at least for the foreseeable future. After Atlético Madrid refused to sell their star forward to the Catalan club, Barcelona sporting director Deco has now closed the door on the saga. Speaking at the Portugal Football Summit, Deco described Álvarez as “past” and said Barcelona must “look forward", making it clear that the club no longer considers the Argentine part of its immediate plans.
That leaves Álvarez with an important decision to make. The 26-year-old wanted a new challenge after an increasingly complicated summer, but Atlético ultimately kept hold of him. Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain remain potential destinations in the wider picture, while staying at the Metropolitano is also a perfectly realistic option.
Here are three realistic transfer choices for Julián Álvarez after Barcelona’s snub.
3. Stay at Atlético Madrid
The simplest option for Álvarez is also potentially the most rewarding: stay at Atlético Madrid and let his football do the talking.
The summer transfer saga created plenty of tension between the player, the club and sections of the Atlético fanbase. However, Álvarez can still change the narrative. Instead of continuing to focus on the failed Barcelona transfer, he could work in silence, remain professional and concentrate entirely on his performances.
That approach could eventually win back supporters who were frustrated by his desire to leave.
Álvarez already has a strong foundation at Atlético. Since joining from Manchester City in 2024, he has established himself as one of the team's most important attacking players, producing goals, assists and creative contributions.
If he remains at Atlético for another few seasons and consistently performs at an elite level, there is even an opportunity to turn an uncomfortable chapter into something much more positive.
Rather than forcing another transfer, Álvarez could attempt to become a club legend.
That would require commitment, consistency and a willingness to embrace Atlético again. If he can deliver major trophies and decisive performances, the Barcelona saga could eventually become little more than a footnote in his Atlético career.
2. Finally make that Arsenal move
If Álvarez still wants to leave Atlético, Arsenal could be the most realistic immediate alternative.
Mikel Arteta's side identified Álvarez as one of its major attacking targets during the 2026 transfer window. Arsenal were also chasing Vinícius Júnior, but that pursuit ended after the Brazilian committed his future to Real Madrid. The Gunners ultimately failed to land either player.
Álvarez therefore remains a logical option for Arsenal.
The situation could become even more interesting in January or during the next summer transfer window. Arsenal finished the summer without adding the elite forward they wanted, while several attacking players departed. Reports have already suggested that the Gunners could revisit Álvarez in January.
For Álvarez, however, accepting Arsenal's approach would represent a major change of direction.
He reportedly preferred Barcelona over a return to English football during the summer, with Arsenal waiting behind the Spanish giants. But with Barcelona no longer interested, that preference may need to change.
Arsenal can offer regular Champions League football, Premier League competition and the chance to become a central figure in Arteta's project. Arteta has also signed a new contract through 2030, reinforcing the long-term direction of the club.
If Álvarez genuinely wants a new challenge away from Atlético, saying yes to Arsenal next time could be the smartest decision.
1. Monitor the Dembélé situation at PSG and wait for them
The most intriguing long-term possibility could be Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG were already linked with Álvarez during the summer, although reports indicated that the Argentine's preference for Barcelona meant the French club subsequently cooled its interest.
However, circumstances can change quickly in football.
Ousmane Dembélé appears likely to remain at PSG, with reports in August claiming that the Ballon d'Or winner had reached an agreement in principle to extend his contract until 2030. Yet, as of September, the situation has not been entirely free of speculation. Dembélé himself recently acknowledged that contract decisions ultimately rest with the club's sporting hierarchy.
Álvarez should therefore monitor the situation rather than immediately close the door on PSG.
If Dembélé were to leave Paris unexpectedly in the future, PSG could look for another elite attacking star. Álvarez could be an attractive solution, even if he is not a direct positional replacement for Dembélé. His versatility, finishing, pressing and ability to operate across the frontline would make him an excellent fit for a club competing for domestic and European honours.
Most importantly, PSG could offer Álvarez a route to remain in Europe at the highest level without requiring him to return to the Premier League.
For a player who originally wanted Barcelona, Paris could ultimately provide another glamorous destination capable of matching his ambitions.
What should Julián Álvarez do next?
Barcelona's decision has changed the equation for Álvarez. Deco's latest comments suggest that the Catalan club has moved on, meaning the Argentine cannot afford to keep waiting for a door that is currently closed.
Staying at Atlético and rebuilding his relationship with the supporters is the safe choice. Arsenal represents the clearest opportunity if he wants to leave soon, while PSG could become the most attractive long-term alternative if circumstances change in Paris.
For now, Álvarez's best move may simply be to focus on football. A strong season at Atlético could give him far more control over where his career goes next.
