Ruben Loftus-Cheek to Manchester United Revisiting His Chelsea Premier League Career

We are here with the latest Manchester United transfer news, as Talksport journalist Alex Crook has reported that Manchester United are looking to sign former Chelsea star Ruben Loftus-Cheek this January Transfer Window. The report states that the club view a loan deal for Ruben Loftus-Cheek as a great opportunity for them to have a better chance of qualifying for the Champions League at the end of the Premier League season.

A huge factor that makes Loftus-Cheek an attraction for Man United is his Premier League experience, and that is what we'll cover in this article. Let us look back at Ruben Loftus-Cheek's time as a Chelsea player in the Premier League.

Manchester United transfer target Ruben Loftus-Cheek's 9 year association with Chelsea

Ruben Loftus-Cheek came through Chelsea’s youth academy, joining the club at age eight and rising steadily through the youth ranks. After standout performances at youth level including winning the FA Youth Cup and Under-21 Premier League, he made his senior debut for Chelsea in December 2014 during a UEFA Champions League match. A few months later, he played his first Premier League game, signaling the start of his long association with the Blues.

In his early seasons, Loftus-Cheek found regular minutes hard to come by, but he began to make an impact in the 2015–16 season. He scored his first senior goal in an FA Cup tie and followed that with his first Premier League goal against Aston Villa, helping Chelsea to a convincing win. His performances earned him a new long-term contract and more first-team opportunities.

The 2016–17 season was notable mainly for the team’s success, with Chelsea winning the Premier League title, a major milestone in Loftus-Cheek’s career. However, he still struggled for consistent starts under manager Antonio Conte

Looking for more game time, Loftus-Cheek spent the 2017–18 season on loan at Crystal Palace, where he gained valuable experience and showcased his potential with regular senior football. After returning to Chelsea, the 2018–19 season became one of his most memorable: he scored a hat-trick in a Europa League match*and contributed key goals in the league, helping Chelsea progress deep into European competition, which they eventually won that season.

Injuries interrupted his momentum, including one that forced him out of the Europa League final, but Chelsea showed faith by signing him to a long-term contract in 2019. He also spent the 2020–21 season on loan at Fulham, continuing to develop his game with more regular starts.

From 2021 until his departure in 2023, Loftus-Cheek returned to Chelsea’s first team, contributing in both cup and league matches. After nearly two decades with the club, he left Chelsea to join AC Milan in 2023, finishing his Blues career with over 150 appearances and several trophies, including the Premier League and Europa League.

Will Manchester United sign Ruben Loftus-Cheek?

The Manchester United transfer news report from Alex Crook has stated that the player has been offered to Manchester United already, however talks are said to be only exploratory at this stage. Another important point to note is that Ruben Loftus-Cheek is personally keen on a return to the Premier League. Manchester United are also keeping an eye on Beşiktaş midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, who previously played for Leicester City.

We'll have to see how this transfer story evolves in the coming days or weeks. One thing is almost certain at this point, it looks highly likely that Manchester United will sign a new midfielder this January Transfer Window to support new manager Michael Carrick.
