India women’s hockey team showed impressive defensive discipline to create history with Asian Games gold after 44 years, as they edged China out by 1-0 to claim the Asian Games 2026 gold medal.
Unlike their major goal-scoring dominant performances at the Asian Games 2026, the Indian women’s team was more focused on defensive discipline after Lalremsiami Hmarzote scored the only goal of the match in the 10th minute. Playing her 200th international match, Lalremsiami produced a powerful strike in front of the goal to snatch the match-winning goal.
China recorded five penalty corners and one penalty stroke (in the second quarter), but failed to score any of those chances, as the goalkeeper Savita Punia heroically saved the penalty stroke. While Indian women had more defensive strategies, they only managed one unsuccessful penalty corner, as the only field goal was enough for them to claim the historic gold medal.
While Indian women won the first Asian Games gold medal in 1982, the year of women's hockey debut at the Asian Games, the latest gold medal became their only second Asian Games gold medal. With this gold medal, Indian women have booked a spot for the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics. The two-time Summer Olympics’ fourth-placed side, India women’s hockey team, failed to qualify for the previous edition in Paris 2024.
At the Asian Games 2026, India women completely dominated in the group stage, scoring a whopping 66 goals while conceding only three times. Indian women finished on top of Pool B by winning all five matches, as they faced South Korea in the Semifinal, ending with a 2-0 victorious scoreline.
