Soorma Hockey Club claimed their first win of the Men’s Hockey India League 2025/26 (Men’s HIL 2025/26) after beating the second-placed in-form HIL Governing Council by 3–1 on Thursday evening (January 16).
In the 15th minute, Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoreline by providing the lead for Soorma Hockey Club from a penalty corner. In the 27th minute, Gurjant Singh scored a field goal, as Soorma got a 2–0 lead. Harmanpreet scored his second goal of the match through a field goal in the 38th minute.
In the 44th minute, in-form Kane Russell, who scored three hat-tricks in the first four games of the tournament, scored the only goal for HIL GC in the match from a penalty corner. With that goal, Russell became the joint leading scorer this season with 10 goals, equal to Ranchi Royals’ Tom Boon’s 10 goals, who scored five last night. While there was no goal in the final quarter, Soorma Hockey Club won the match by 3–1.
Soorma Hockey Club have climbed to the seventh place, as SG Pipers have been pushed to the eighth or last position in the points table with four points. With one win, one shootout win, and two losses, Soorma have five points. On the other hand, it was the first full-time defeat for HIL GC this season, while they earlier recorded three wins and one shootout loss.
