The ISL 2024-25 season will begin on Friday, 13 September 2024 with a cracker of a game in store. The league opener is a repetition of last season’s ISL final as Shield defenders Mohun Bagan Super Giant take on Cup winners Mumbai City FC at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. This will be the 11th edition of the competition and will have 13 teams participating this time. Mohammedan Sporting Club are the latest addition to the ISL after becoming the second team to earn promotion to the top flight by winning the I-League. However, the match fixtures of Hyderabad FC are contingent on them clearing the AIFF Club Licensing.
The Black Panther joins the other two Kolkata giants in the first division for the first time in 10 years. With three Kolkata clubs, there will be six city derbies each season with the first one between Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan SC falling on 5th October 2024. The humongous clash between the Mariners and East Bengal also happened later that month on the 19th. Similarly, the first Southern derby between Kerala Blasters and Bengaluru FC is scheduled only days later on 25 October 2024. Mumbai City FC taking on NorthEast United at Mumbai Football Arena is the last game of the year.
The team finishing at the top of the league after the league phase will be crowned ISL Winner’s Shield champions with a place in the 2025-26 AFC Champions League 2 group stage. This is the first season in which ISL clubs are no longer required to include at least one player from the AFC member association in their squad. The salary cap has also increased with the club allowed to sign one marquee player outside the cap. As per the AFC roadmap agreed in 2019, relegation was about to start this season but the AIFF has decided to postpone it.
