The truncated 2025-26 ISL season has offered a breathtaking title race for the ISL Winner’s Shield that enters its deciding period in the final month of the campaign, May 2026. After months of intense competition, tactical battles and shifting momentum, a handful of fixtures now stand out as potential title deciders. With the points table finely poised, every goal, every defensive lapse, and every moment of brilliance could prove decisive in shaping the championship race. As many as six teams are involved in the battle to take the top spot, with holders Mohun Bagan Super Giant, former winners Mumbai City FC, FC Goa and Jamshedpur FC and new contenders Bengaluru FC and East Bengal all expected to play crucial roles in this dramatic run-in. Whether it’s historic rivalries, tactical duels between top managers, or the pressure of must-win situations, these fixtures carry significance far beyond three points. With no ISL Cup to play for this season, winning the Shield becomes that more significant with a spot in the AFC Champions League 2 up for grabs.
Here are the potential ISL Shield title deciders to watch out for in May 2026:
Mumbai City FC vs East Bengal - Mumbai Football Arena (Tuesday, 5 May 2026 - 19:30)
A colossal battle will be played at the Mumbai Football Arena in the first week of May 2026, where third-place Mumbai City FC and fourth-place East Bengal will collide in an attempt to derail each other’s title chances. The Islanders were the only unbeaten side in the league until that streak was blown away in a loss to Goa, while a goalless draw against another contender, Bengaluru FC, prevented them from displacing Mohun Bagan at the top. This is the first time Petr Kratky’s side failed to score a goal, let alone doing it twice and is now desperate to end their three-game winless run to prevent them from falling back in the chase. They are just a point away from first place, with a victory being absolutely crucial, but it has to come against a reformed East Bengal, also gunning for the Shield. It is their final home game of the season, so they have to make this one count, with just two matches remaining.
Despite having Miguel Ferreira suspended against Odisha FC following his red card in the 3-3 thriller against Bengaluru FC, East Bengal clinched a massive 3-0 victory at the Salt Lake Stadium, which puts them back into contention for the Shield. While other results eventually pushed them down to fifth in the ISL table, the Red and Gold, through their recent surge in form, are just three points away from the top-placed Jamshedpur FC with two games in hand. Now with their Brazilian playmaker back for the trip to Mumbai after his punishment was minimised, having not lost in the last three trips to Andheri, with the previous two ending goalless, the Kolkata giants are more confident than ever. However, their manager Oscar Bruzon declared that he will be leaving the role at the end of the season despite transforming a low-lying outfit since their introduction in ISL in 2020 to a Shield contender this season, with five wins from nine games played and suffering just one loss, giving them extra motivation to win the silverware.
FC Goa vs Mohun Bagan - Fatorda Stadium (Saturday, 9 May 2026 - 17:00)
For the third season in a row, FC Goa and Mohun Bagan are involved in a title-deciding clash, with the latter going on to clinch the Shield in the previous two occasions. Despite the disappointment of failing to catch up to the Mariners, the Gaurs put up a strong fight in this fixture at Fatorda in the last two seasons. They conceded a narrow 1-0 defeat in 2024, but defeated a far stronger visitors in the previous season. Manolo Marquez’s side will use it as motivation ahead of facing the Green and Maroon to finally get over the line this time this season. However, suffering a frustrating loss to now table-toppers Jamshedpur FC away puts them under immense pressure. The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak last month, which included a win over then-unbeaten Mumbai City FC at Fatorda and a first win in 11 years at Guwahati against NorthEast United, which put them in the Shield race. Now they are trailing by two points from the top spot in third.
Mohun Bagan started the Sergio Lobera era perfectly, winning the first four games of the season in dominating fashion, having already been touted as favourites to win the Shield for a third season in a row. However, their title defence faltered after a draw away at Bengaluru FC and a defeat to Mumbai City FC, which displaced them from the top spot. But the Mariners turned their form around with back-to-back vital wins against Punjab FC and Northeast United. This set of results puts destiny firmly in Green and Maroon’s hands as they will secure the Winner’s Shield if they win the remaining games of the season. Unlike others, they will not have to rely on other results in that case. Aside from the Kolkata derby, where they will face rivals and contender East Bengal, FC Goa is the next main opponent in the race, so three points will be crucial in their bid to maintain dominance. Bagan also comes into this game a lot fresher than their opponents, with a three-week rest.
Jamshedpur FC vs Bengaluru FC - The Furnace (Saturday, 9 May 2026 - 19:30)
After a run of five winless games, Jamshedpur FC turned their form superbly with back-to-back victories, the latest one coming against a Shield contender, FC Goa, putting them back on top of the ISL table. Bidding to win their second Shield honour under Owen Coyle, the side became an early contender for the prize with four straight wins before they hit a rough patch, including shock losses to lowly Northeast United and Kerala Blasters, even though they picked up a crucial point against Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City. The return of Madih Talal from injury seemed to be an important factor for the side to get their mojo back. The side now faces sixth-placed Bengaluru FC in the penultimate game of the season, in their third straight home encounter, to take three important points and extend their lead at the top and put pressure on others.
The Men of Steel need others to drop points to fulfil their dream, the same scenario the Blues face, but they need the teams above them to fall off drastically to have any chance for the Shield. The odds are extremely low for them with just two games remaining after the mid-season manager change, which puts them four points adrift from the top spot. Despite starting brightly under Renedy Singh, the transition to Pep Munoz has produced just one win and a run of four winless games. Bengaluru FC now have to win on their trip to Jamshedpur in the do-or-die to keep themselves alive in the race, or else it will be another trophyless season for the last edition’s ISL Cup finalists. The result in their final game of the season against Southern rivals Chennaiyin FC will not matter in that case. However, the team’s chance could be over even before this fixture.
Mohun Bagan vs East Bengal - Salt Lake Stadium (Sunday, 17 May 2026 - 19:30)
In what could be the most significant Kolkata derby in ISL history, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal will face off in Indian football’s most celebrated fixture, where three points will provide a vital advantage in the Shield race for the victorious side. This rivalry has been tilted to one side since the pair joined the top-flight league, with the Mariners staying unbeaten in this clash, winning nine of the 10 meetings in the competition so far, while the Red and Gold have picked up only one draw. Another win for Lobera’s team will put them just three points away from lifting the Shield mathematically again, provided they win against FC Goa and Inter Kashi leading up to the derby. Mohun Bagan will be confident in doing so after an upsurge in their form, but their rivals are a different unit this time and will produce a far more intense battle than the previous instances.
East Bengal will be looking for their first ISL derby win, as all of their previous victories against their city rivals since 2020 have come in cup competitions, with three points boosting their chance of winning the first ISL Shield. The Torch Bearers need to take full points against the Islanders and Punjab FC to remain in the conversation for the title before they play the iconic fixture at the Salt Lake Stadium on 17 May 2026. The side will not want to bottle the opportunity after they found themselves in this position for the first time since joining the ISL, while they also want their departing manager, Bruzon, to create the derby moment for them. Aside from Miguel, the side will rely on their star signing and Golden Boot chaser, Youssef Ezzejjari, to fire in the evening and also extend his lead over close contender Bagan’s Jamie Maclaren, with whom he will be sharing the pitch.
