Mirabai Chanu brought a historic weightlifting medal at the Asian Games 2026, as her silver became India’s first Asian Games weightlifting medal in the 21st century.
North Korean Ri Song-gum dominated both snatch and clean & jerk, as none of the opponents managed to challenge her in the women’s 49kg event. With the successful lift of 94kg in the snatch and 121kg in the clean & jerk, she secured the gold medal with 215kg lifts.
Mirabai Chanu successfully lifter 83kg, 85kg, and 87kg in the snatch before lifting 107 and 111 kgs in the clean & jerk event. She had the lift of 198kg to secure the historic silver medal, while India’s previous Asian Games weightlifting medal came in 1998 when Karnam Malleswari won a silver in the women’s 63kg event.
Luluk Diana Tri Wijayana from Indonesia won the bronze medal with the successful lifts of 88kg in snatch and 103 kg in clean & jerk, managing a total of 191kg.

Who is Mirabai Chanu?
Mirabai Chanu is a familiar name in Indian weightlifting. The Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics silver medalist has three Commonwealth Games gold medals (2018, 2022, and 2026) and one World Weightlifting Championships gold medal (2017).
In 2018, Mirabai was honoured with the Padma Shri and Khel Ratna Award. In 2022, she was honourably appointed as an Additional Superintendent of Police in the Manipur Police.
